Qatar is currently in the process of preparing a comprehensive bid file for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, according to Arabic daily Al-Watan, who quoted ‘reliable sources’ as saying.

It is understood that the country is preparing a ‘complete bid file involving all relevant government agencies.’

Qatar had entered into a ‘continuous dialogue’ with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2020, which is discussions designed to explore options for future Olympics hosts. Qatar had been in the running for the 2032 Olympic Games, but they were awarded to Brisbane, Australia.

Over the years, Qatar has been building experience by hosting major events including the 2006 Doha Asian Games, 2011 and 2023 AFC Asian Cup football, 2015 World Handball Championships, 2019 World Athletics Championships and the 2024 Aquatics Championships.

It reached a pinnacle with the staging of the Middle East’s first-ever FIFA World Cup, in 2022. Qatar is now looking forward to host the 2030 Asian Games.

Officials are hoping to leverage the expertise and infrastructure to host the quadrennial Olympic Games. In 2021, it had been claimed that 80 percent of required venues for the Games already exist. An additional bonus is the modern and capable transportation infrastructure.

The IOC has said several cities are interested in hosting the 2036 Olympics, with India, Germany and Turkey already making their interests known. South Korea, Indonesia, and Hungary have also indicated possible interest.

While there is no set timetable for the awarding of the Summer Games, the IOC’s Future Host Commission for the Games — led by former Croatian president Kolinda Garbar-Kitarovic — will engage interested nations in a dialogue designed to identify mutual opportunities.

Once a good fit is found, the region is elevated to preferred candidate status, setting it up for an IOC Session vote after a period of due diligence. It is understood that elections for the 2036 hosts will not take place before 2026 or 2027.
