Qatar underlines its status as Middle East and North Africa region’s most peaceful nation
Qatar has always prided itself as one of the best countries in the world to live in, with very little crime and enjoying a high quality of life.
If one needed further confirmation, just one look at the 17th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2023 would be more than enough. According to the annual report, Qatar was ranked as the most peaceful country in the entire Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. It has remained the same since 2008. It also put Qatar 21st in the global ranking list, up by two spots from the previous ranking.
The average level of global peacefulness deteriorated for the 9th consecutive year, given the ongoing rise in post-COVID civil unrest, political instability and regional/global conflicts.

The index, produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness. It measures the state of peace across three domains — the level of societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict and the degree of militarization.
“Qatar remains the most peaceful country in the region, a position it has held since 2008. It is the only country in the region to be ranked in the top 25 most peaceful countries globally,” GPI stated.
Last year, the Global Peace Index ranked Qatar as the region’s most peaceful country and 23rd out of 163 nations.
“Qatar improved in overall peacefulness in 2023, driven by improvements in political instability, external conflicts fought and UN peacekeeping funding. Restoration of diplomatic relations in 2021 with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt helped improve Qatar’s internal political situation. Relations have remained stable throughout 2022, resulting in a full-year improvement to political stability,” the GPI added.
One reason why Qatar continues to be a peaceful nation is the strong leadership of HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who recently celebrated his 10th year of ascension to the throne.
Qatar had recently been ranked as the world’s ‘safest country’ for the fifth year in a row by the Numbeo Crime Index.
Doha had also been chosen as the 27th Best City in the world to live, work, visit and invest in by Resonance Consultancy — a leading global advisor on placemaking, branding and marketing for the world’s best cities and destinations.
Meanwhile, Kuwait placed second in regional ranking in the Global Peace Index 2023 and 35th globally. Oman (48), Jordan (62) and the UAE (75) were in the top five, while Tunisia (81), Morocco (84), Algeria (96), Bahrain (108) and Saudi Arabia (119) made up the top ten. Yemen (162) was MENA’s least peaceful country.
The index placed Europe as the world’s most peaceful region, with seven of the 10 most peaceful countries belonging to the continent. The asia-Pacific region hosted the three other peaceful nations in the top 10.
Meanwhile, the MENA region remained the world’s least peaceful region. It is home to four of the ten least peaceful countries.
While Iceland maintained its position as the world’s most peaceful country, Denmark displaced Ireland to the No.2 spot. New Zealand, Austria, Singapore, Portugal, Slovenia, Japan and Switzerland completed the top-10 list of most peaceful nations on earth.
Over the last 15 years, the world has become a less peaceful place, with the average country score decreasing by five per cent, noted GPI.
