People treat the holy month of Ramadan as a time for spiritual discipline and deep contemplation of one’s relationship with God. For many, it is a time for extra prayer, to read and reflect ion one’s life.

Qatar’s Ministry of Culture, in a bid to provide quality reading material for people during the Holy month, launched the second edition of the Ramadan Book Fair at the Darb Al Saai headquarters in Umm Salal on Thursday.

Qatar’s Minister of Culture Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad Al Thani inaugurated the exhibition which will run until April 5. It features 79 publishing houses and bookstores including 31 from Qatar and 48 from abroad.

A host of dignitaries including Qatar National Library president Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari, former minister of education Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Turki Al Subaie and Qatar University president Dr Hassan bin Rashid Al Derham also attended.

Sheikh Abdulrahman toured the exhibition and was briefed on the most important publications and titles offered by various publishing houses.

“The Ramadan Book Fair is a rich extension of a cultural year full of activities and events. It’ll contribute to the spread of values of creativity and innovation. The event also opens broader horizons for constructive intellectual dialogue on many issues among creators and different segments of society,” said Sheikh Abdulrahman.

“The Ramadan Book Fair is characterised by the diversity of its activities. From productive family events to cultural and religious seminars, visitors will find a rich combination of culture and tradition. The Darb Al Saai has become a major destination for cultural, heritage and social activities in the country,” he added.

“The exhibition will help drive book publishing in the country and expand the reading circle. The Ministry of Culture will spare no effort to support Qatari publishing houses through a number of events,” said Assistant Undersecretary for Cultural Affairs Dr Ghanem bin Mubarak Al Ali Al Maadeed.

“While the first phase began with the Qatar University exhibition, it’s now the Ramadan Book Fair and it’ll be followed by the Doha International Book Fair in June,” he added.

The Ramadan Book Fair will include a number of activities every day after Tarawih prayers. While the Ramadan Council will gather a group of intellectuals for a public discussion, activities on the main stage will include numerous seminars in cooperation with the Ministry of Endowment (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs.

Ramadan Book Fair Director Jassim Al Buainain said cultural activities were held every day in the main theatre. It includes cultural and religious seminars, five art and culture workshops, puppet theatre and Hazawi Al Fareej (traditional storytelling) for children.
