HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, during a recent cabinet reshuffle, elevated HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani to the post of Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The top official, who efficiently navigated the country through some difficult situations, is a voice of reason and calmness. In his first televised interview since taking charge, he spoke about a number of vital issues facing Qatar today.

Sheikh Mohammed said Qatar was looking to update its teaching system, enhance the government’s performance and open the economic sector to global competition.
FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
The global tournament helped accelerate the pace of Qatar’s infrastructure development and implementation of Qatar National Vision 2030. In two months, the country is set to unveil its third developmental plan.
The Qatar World Cup achieved the highest-ever viewership for the tournament and the country will build on its success to host other major events. More than 730,000 tourists visited Qatar in January and February 2023 and the number is increasing.

Improvements in the health and education sectors
We’ve spoken to the Ministry of Public Health to improve their services, and the results will appear after Ramadan. It’s normal for administrative problems to occur, but this doesn’t mean the health service isn’t at the required level. There will be programmes to facilitate medical appointments within the same month.
The budget for the health sector is QR21bn. Implementing health insurance will relieve pressure on government hospitals. About 20% of Qatar’s budget is dedicated for health and education.

The education sector is an essential tributary for all competencies in the country. We’ll address the challenges of the education system.
Employment opportunities
Qatar is a small country and government institutions have a limited capacity to absorb staff. “Last year 7,127 citizens were employed, out of whom 5,200 were in the government sector and the rest in the private sector. This is a percentage that’s considered a leap especially in the private sector, which has begun to absorb such numbers.
If we focus only on the government employing citizens, this will be unsustainable. The government will provide jobs annually, but people must open up to the private sector. There should also be personal initiatives by Qatari citizens to work in the private sector, and everyone should be keen to enter the field of business and entrepreneurship, which has become a necessity, not a luxury.
Qatar’s Sovereign Fund to be among the world’s top-five
There’s a financial framework mechanism in place that depends mainly on surpluses. The country’s sovereign fund is one aspect of disbursing financial surpluses.
HH The Amir’s directives are that revenue from the expansion of gas fields will go into investments for future generations. After it enters into production, it’ll be a major source for the fund. We always set interim target numbers for returns from the fund’s investments, and we aspire for the Qatari sovereign fund to be one of the five largest sovereign funds soon.

Qatar’s resilient economy
Qatar is part of a world that’s currently facing an economic crisis. However, the country’s economic performance is regarded as one of the best in the world, according to the International Monetary Fund. Qatar also always scores below the world average when it comes to inflation rates. We’ve found great progress in the national Qatari product and we’ll work on programmes to stimulate exports and productivity. Qatar is heading towards diversification and is encouraging investment from abroad.
Efficient use of technology
Qatar has the best technological infrastructure anywhere in the region. We’ll expedite the use and reap the benefits of utilising artificial intelligence.
