Qatar’s Fares Ibrahim triumphs with Double Gold and Bronze at Qatar Cup
Qatar's weightlifting sensation, Fares Ibrahim, shined on the ninth day of the Qatar Cup Championship, securing his spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics. In the 102 kg weight class, Ibrahim outshone 29 competitors, bagging two golds and a bronze. His remarkable feat included a gold in weightlifting (224 kg), another gold in overall weight (400 kg), and a bronze in the snatch (176 kg).
In an epic showdown at Aspire Ladies Hall, the 25-year-old Fares Ibrahim faced off against world champion Liu Huanhua, securing two golds in clean and jerk and total weight, along with a bronze in snatch. The competition peaked with a gripping battle between the two contenders, culminating in Fares setting a total weight record of 400 kg.
Reflecting on his victory, Fares, already set for his third consecutive Olympic appearance in Paris 2024, expressed a hunger for the world record. Despite missing the mark in a daring attempt at 232 kg, Fares remains optimistic, eyeing the Asian Championships and the qualifiers in Thailand for another shot at glory.
The event also witnessed standout performances, with Garik Karapetyan of Armenia clinching gold in the snatch. Liang Xiaomei of China dominated the women's 81kg category, retiring after setting world records in clean and jerk and total.
Commending Ibrahim's triumph, Mohammed Yousef Al Mana, the First Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, lauded the athlete's outstanding performance in the Qatar Cup IWF Grand Prix II.
Dedicating this achievement to Qatari sports and recognizing the pivotal support from the Olympic Committee, the Weightlifting Federation's President expressed optimism for continued success, especially in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The awards ceremony witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Qatar Olympic Committee’s first Vice President and Qatar, Arab and Asian Weightlifting Federations President Mohammed Yousef Al Mana; Yemeni Minister of Youth and Sports H E Nayef Saleh Al Bakri; and First Vice President of the Yemeni Olympic Committee Khaled Al Khulaifi.
