Qatar’s Hamad International Airport wins another prestigious award

Thanks to its geographical positioning and excellent infrastructure, Qatar has built up its reputation as one of the world’s most connected countries.
The state-of-the-art Hamad International Airport (HIA) has played a big role in helping the nation achieve this milestone. With a lot of effort and planning going into every aspect of the HIA, the airport has become a quick favourite among passengers and critics alike.
The HIA added yet another recognition to its name when it was recently chosen as the ‘Best Overall Airport in the World’ during the 19th Annual Global Traveler Tested Reader Survey Awards. It was also awarded the ‘Best Airport in the Middle East’ for the sixth year in a row.
The HIA was also recognised as one of the top five in Best Airport Dining, Best Airport Shopping, Best Duty-Free Shopping in the World and Best Duty-Free Shopping in the Middle East.
The awards, constituted by Global Traveler magazine, asked frequent luxury travellers to name the best entities in over 80 travel-related categories. More than 22,000 people took part in the poll.
HIA’s Senior Vice President (Facilities Management) Michael McMillan said the accolades were a testament to their commitment towards the passenger-first approach. He said a bespoke experience — with safety, security, stress-free travelling and sustainability — was at the core of the airport’s business.
“It’s indeed a great achievement for HIA to be recognised as the best overall airport by Global Traveller Awards. These accolades are a positive reflection towards our customer-facing staff, our strategy towards introducing bespoke passenger experiences, investment in the best innovations and an expansive facility that becomes a playground for discovery and creating new memories,” he said.
“We’ll continue to globally raise the airport operation standards and aim to constantly exceed passenger experience and introduce industry firsts,” he added.
The HIA, since starting operations in 2014, has expanded its network and now serves over 170 worldwide destinations.
In November 2022, it unveiled Phase A of its expansion project with a new attraction — The ORCHARD — ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Last year, the HIA had been named as the World’s Best Airport for the second year in a row at the SKYTRAX World Airport Awards 2022, during the Passenger Terminal Expo in Paris, France.
For football enthusiasts, the world’s first-ever dedicated FIFA store was recently unveiled at the Qatar Duty Free shop, inside the HIA. The FIFA store features clothing, footballs, accessories, and World Cup 2022 official licensed goods. In addition to FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 memorabilia, customers can also purchase classic apparel from previous World Cups as well.
Last but not least, the HIA recently announced the launch of a next-generation high-speed Wi-Fi service, empowered by Cisco technologies, to further enhance the airport’s passenger experience.
