Qatar’s mobile internet speed blazes a trail

Qatar has always taken pride in its futuristic communication networks and related infrastructure, often setting new benchmarks for the rest of the world to catch up and follow.
The country set a new mark in November 2022 — during the exciting early days of the FIFA World Cup — when mobile internet speed in Qatar became the fastest anywhere in the world for the entire month.
According to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index Rankings report, the median mobile internet download speed in Qatar was 176.18 Mbps while the upload speed was 25.13 Mbps.
The UAE, with a download speed of 139.41 Mbps, came in second place while Norway (131.54), South Korea (118.76) and Denmark (113.44) were next in the top-five nations.
The Ookla Speed Test Index compares Internet speed data from around the world on a monthly basis. Data for the Index comes from the hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using Speedtest every month.
Using Speedtest Intelligence data to analyse network performance across Qatar’s various World Cup stadiums throws up interesting numbers. While the Al Janoub Stadium recorded the fastest median 5G download performance at 757.77 Mbps, the average speeds across all stadiums combined were over 400 Mbps.
Meanwhile, the Ras Bufontas and Airport Free Zone recorded the highest 5G performance.
The lighting fast performance is nothing new for Qatar. The country’s mobile internet speeds were ranked as the fastest in the world in 2021.
