Multiple venues across Qatar are currently hosting a variety of sports activities as the country celebrates the annual National Sport Day (NSD) with full vigour and enthusiasm.

The National Sport Day, an annual festival of health and fitness observed on the second Tuesday of February every year, has been growing bigger and better with each passing year.

This year, activities are taking place at different locations including Aspire Park, Old Doha Port, Katara Cultural Village, Msheireb Downtown Doha, Qatar Foundation’s Education City, Lusail, and The Pearl Island, among others.

Qatar’s Minister of Sports and Youth HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani said NSD offered a great occasion to highlight the country’s emphasis on improving people’s quality of life by promoting sports and an active lifestyle.

“Qatar has spared no effort to promote people’s quality of life and advance them as a fundamental pillar of social and economic development. The ministry seeks to achieve this through its vision of ‘active and responsible youth with a sense of patriotism, and a society that practices sports,’ he said.

“Qatar is a pioneer in realizing the importance of sports and its role in development and public health. I urge all members of the society to actively participate in different sports activities and benefit from sports facilities available throughout the country,” he added.

Eng. Yasser bin Abdullah Al Jamal, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, said NSD had achieved impressive results in terms of raising awareness of the importance of sports.

“2024 statistics show that 74% of community members aged 15 and above practice sports regularly or irregularly. That’s a 52% increase from the numbers recorded in 2015,” he said.
