Qatar’s Sara, Ali in the hunt for medals at Paris Paralympic Games
Paralympians Sara Hamdi Masoud and Ali Arshad will carry Qatar’s hopes at the 2024 Paralympics Games, which will kick off in the French capital city on Wednesday.
While shot putter Sara will fall back on her extensive Paralympic experience to get ahead, Ali — who excelled in Asian competitions — will hope to do well in wheelchair racing.
Sara, who competes in the F33 class, hopes to improve on her silver medal from the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She had been the first Qatari female athlete to clinch a Paralympic medal.
The 38-year-old has also won silver medals at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London and at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Ali earned a bronze at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games. The 20-year-old also won a silver and two bronze medals at the Asian Para Games in Bahrain the same year. The Qatari delegation to Paris is headed by Qatar Paralympic Federation Secretary General Dr Hassan Al Ansari.
Qatari athletes made their Paralympics debut in Atlanta in 1996. Since then, Qatar have won three medals — with Abdulrahman Abdulqadir Fiqi (men’s shot put F34) securing a silver at Rio 2016 and a bronze at 2020 Tokyo.
Around 4,400 athletes, from over 180 countries, are expected to be a part of the Paris Paralympic Games. They will compete in 549 events, taking place at 18 competition sites including the iconic Stade de France, Grand Palais and the Chateau de Versailles.
