Saudi Arabia announces Day of Arafat on June 27 & Eid al-Adha on June 28
Saudi Arabia announced that Monday, June 19, will be the first day of the Hijri month of Dhu al-Hijjah.
While the Day of Arafat will fall on Tuesday, June 27, Eid al-Adha will start a day later — on Wednesday (June 28).
The announcement came after scholars spotted the crescent moon on Sunday, heralding the start of Dhul Hijjah — the 12th and final month in the Islamic calendar — on Monday.
While the start date of Hajj will fall on the eighth day of Dhul Hijjah, Eid al-Adha will begin on its tenth day.
Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court had called on Muslims in the Kingdom to sight the crescent moon on Sunday evening. An official committee was also set up to sight the moon at sunset.
Eid al-Adha means the 'festival of the sacrifice,’ which commemorates how the Prophet Ibrahim was asked by God in a dream to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as a test of his faith.
