Soon, Qatar won’t import vegetables anymore!
A Qatari delegation, headed by the country’s Minister of Municipality Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah, attended the 38th General Assembly of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday.
Al Attiyah said the country had made giant strides in food security, supporting and helping improve agricultural, animal, and fish production.
“Over the last five years, we’ve given ample support to agricultural producers, and they’ve achieved significant production increases. It’s led to a 98% hike in the production of fresh vegetables. We’ve also become 100% self-sufficient in the production of fresh milk, dairy products, and fresh poultry,” he said.
Al Attiyah underlined Qatar’s great attention to the fish production sector and its endeavour to sustain it through development programmes, most notably the ‘Aquatic Research Center.’
He stressed that Qatar would continue to provide all support and assistance to various agricultural projects, which are considered an important tool in maintaining production and increasing it in accordance with food security plans and strategies.
Al Attiyah praised Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the 38th AOAD General Assembly and spoke of the organisation’s important role in the field of promoting joint Arab action in the agricultural sector.
The meeting discussed the decisions of the Ministerial Committee formed for Arab food security for member states, based on the consultative meeting between the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and the Arab Ministers of Agriculture, which was held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat in September.
