Stars of Science Season 15 ‘Top Arab Innovator’ announced
The momentous Season 15 of Qatar Foundation's renowned edutainment series, ‘Stars of Science’, concluded in a burst of innovation, entrepreneurship, and Arab scientific achievement. The title of Top Arab Innovator was claimed by robotics engineer Mohammed Abbas Albumijdad, from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The culmination of this groundbreaking season was revealed by the show's host, Khalid Al Jumaily, who announced that Albumijdad secured the first-place spot with his pioneering invention, a crawler robot designed for vertical surfaces. This feat also secured him the Grand Prize.
In response to his victory, Albumijdad said, “I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who believed in my project and voted for me. Your faith and support have made this achievement possible, and I will continue to combine my passion for robotics and engineering to create a safer and more sustainable future for construction projects across the world.”
The crawler robot for vertical surfaces, the product of two years of intensive labor by Albumijdad, is specifically engineered to monitor extensive vertical spaces. Its applications are versatile and encompass the inspection of dams, skyscrapers, bridges, and more, facilitating tasks such as crack detection, cleaning, and operations in hard-to-reach or hazardous areas. The robot's potential to significantly reduce risk and enhance safety in the field of maintenance and fault detection is undeniable.
As another successful season of "Stars of Science" drew to a close, Aljazi Al Henzab, Director of Media at Qatar Foundation said, We congratulate all the contestants of the milestone Season 15 for their remarkable contributions and extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mohammed Abbas Albumijdad. As the premier innovation show in the Arab world, Stars of Science has indeed come a long way in fostering a culture of innovation across the region. Together, we will continue to pave the way for a brighter, more innovative future in the Middle East and beyond.”
Egyptian mechatronics engineer Aly Magdy Mohamed secured the second position and a share of the Grand Prize with his ingenious smart marine drone, designed to expedite beachside rescues. His drone seamlessly integrates Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, cameras, Global Positioning System (GPS), Global System of Mobile (GSM) communication, Lidar for obstacle avoidance, and health monitoring devices, providing an advanced alternative to traditional, human-powered rescue methods.
For aspiring Arab innovators eager to partake in this remarkable journey, known for not only producing numerous success stories but also an array of innovative products in the market, applications for Season 16 of ‘Stars of Science’ are open until Friday, December 1, 2023.
