Around 16,000 volunteers gathered at Lusail Stadium for the orientation event, which featured football legends and FIFA top brass. The ceremony saw a preview of the upcoming event and how volunteers played a vital role in it. Furthermore, the official volunteer uniform was also revealed, along with a new e-learning platform that will provide convenient training and information resources.

Lusail stadium acted as the ideal venue for the event as this was the first time that all volunteers gathered to formally start their training and reflect on their journey ahead.

Eng. Yasir Al Jamal, Director General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) opened the event, acknowledging and welcoming the significant contribution of volunteers for the upcoming experience and the general success of the FIFA World Cup™.

With 45 different functional roles of the volunteers, the event ensured a sense of community and allowed everyone to make themselves familiar with their respective activities, ultimately giving them an insight into the expectations and rewards of taking part.

FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer - World Cup and Managing Director for Q22, Colin Smith, struck a note of gratitude and inclusivity: “Volunteers are our true heartbeat because their passion and selfless devotion sustain everything we do. That’s the common thread that unites 20,000 volunteers, irrespective of nationality, culture, age, gender, and experience. It’s through their efforts that the FIFA World Cup™ in Qatar can be considered the most inclusive ever and will connect people from all cultures and backgrounds through the game of football.”

Celebrity hosts Abood Afro and Anshou Jain kept the upbeat momentum alive and led everyone through the program which featured dance performances and videos reels of encouraging words from English football superstar David Beckham and Australia’s top FIFA World Cup™ scorer, former Aussie national Tim Cahill.

CEO of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ LLC, Nasser Al Khater, addressed some questions about the significance and wider impact of such a massive volunteer campaign:

“We hope first that each volunteer will have gained valuable skills, experiences, and friendships that will enrich their lives and just make them better, happier, more confident people, regardless of their continued path. This is a fine legacy for any nation. “From the macro-view, I’m confident that societies will start to embrace a wider culture of volunteerism as an expression of both national pride and self-betterment, as it’s something which also aligns with our traditional values of honor and generosity.”

Nasser Al-Mogaiseeb, Volunteer Strategy Manager, was full of praise of the critical stakeholders involved in supporting the volunteer program:

“The outstanding quality and sheer volume of our volunteer program would have been unthinkable without the abiding support of all our critical volunteer stakeholders, who represent the true pillars of community volunteerism in Qatar. Over the past year, our joint Volunteer Legacy Group has provided essential help in spreading awareness, training, and recruitment of volunteers through the combined resource networks of Qatar Foundation, Qatar Voluntary Centre, Qatar Museums, Qatar Charity, Qatar Olympic Committee, Qatar Red Crescent, Education Above All, Tomoh, Nama, Qatar University and Qatar Football Association. They have contributed to the generous team behind our team of valued volunteers.“

Uniform reveal

One of the anticipated highlights of the evening was the official volunteer uniform reveal, which brought in massive cheers of approval from the crowds. Signature volunteer colors black, white, mint, and purple dominated the Adidas design with the brand’s triple-stripe detail and a distinctive heart logo design to represent the volunteer spirit. The uniform has an entire wardrobe of caps, long and short sleeve tops, jackets, pants, socks, and shoes, plus optional head scarves for female volunteers.

E-learning platform

The full course of the training journey was introduced via video presentations, including the e-learning platform that covered topics such as sustainability, cultural awareness, and customer services. The platform will give access to all the key resources and e-learning modules to the volunteers that will prepare them for the role at their own pace, regardless of locale, given the fact that many volunteers are arriving from abroad as well.

The next stage for the volunteers includes their general, role-specific training online and venue at the actual sites where they will be based and perform their roles. Towards the final stages, in-person training will be provided to give the volunteers a hands-on experience of the tasks they will be performing during the actual events. The portal will be regularly updated and will continue to serve as a knowledge and resource with refreshers and tips on maintaining health and well-being.

Once the training is completed and all volunteers have received their uniform packages, the fun is expected to then begin! An adventure of a lifetime!
