UDC clears 2 Tonnes of Marine waste

On Saturday, May 04, 2024, 118 professional divers joined forces in Qatar's inaugural 'Seabed Cleanup Campaign' orchestrated by the United Development Company (UDC). The event, spanning a 30,000 sq m area of the Porto Arabia Marina on The Pearl Island, marked a significant milestone in UDC's comprehensive sustainability strategy.

Aligned with UDC's five-year environmental and sustainability agenda initiated in 2022, the campaign resonates directly with UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 : Life Below Water. Abdullah Ali al-Yafei, UDC's Public Services executive director, emphasized the imperative of conserving marine ecosystems and resources. 

With a focus on community engagement, the initiative aims to instill a culture of environmental responsibility among residents of The Pearl Island and Qatar at large. Notably, the event coincided with Earth Day 2024, encouraging the urgency of safeguarding oceans and coastal environments. 

In addition to environmental conservation, the campaign served a platform for safety awareness, Khalil Rashid al-Naimi of the General Directorate of Civil Defence highlighted the importance of equipping residents with essential safety protocols. 

Leading the dive team, marine activist Khaled Zaki, emphasized the educational impact on youth, leveraging real-time publicity on social media platforms. The collaboration received praise from Ghanem al-Diab, a senior administrative affairs expert at the Ministry of Social Development and Family, recognizing the dual benefit of environmental sustainability and support for local communities. 

Zainab al-Shammari, head of programmes and events at Friends of the Environment Centre, restated the commitment to Qatar's environmental goals emphasizing community engagement and national identity preservation. 

Simultaneously, eco-friendly activities engaged over 250 participants, encouraging the community's dedication to sustainable practices. All collected waste underwent a rigorous recycling process, aligning with responsible waste management practices and minimizing landfill deposition.
