The Blasphemy Collection

By jauntie

This was first published in The Times in October 2007.  I found it interesting reading in respect of the impact these publications/films/art had on various aspects of our lives.

The list counts down from 20 to 1 and you will see how the impact of the most recent tends towards 'deaths' as opposed to just political, criminal or religious 'outrage' .   Some of those mentioned I'd never heard of!  (not sure I really want to!)

It's a long list so I will just copy the results of the findings with a preci and post the link if you want to see the full 'blog' commentary regarding each 'item'.

like you say, maybe it's an 'age' thing, because I didn't find either of those irreligious!  Just alternative :D

And on the 'age' thing - these days I don't think ANY opinions on what may or may not have happened 2000 years ago would surprise me.

In fact I 'think' that what caused unrest about Jesus Christ Superstar was the fact that he WAS portrayed as a man and not God.  But then I always took my religious learning, where I was taught that Jesus was the Son of God, to mean that we (including him) were ALL God's Children.  I never, ever took it to mean that Jesus, himself, was God.

But then I never asked anyone if my thoughts on the matter were in line with the Christian beliefs, so ......   what do I know?!

For some reason I didn't think the Life of Brian was blasphemous, maybe it was my because of my age when it came out, however when I watched the Di Vinci code DVD.

You should of seen my face, when I found out they were saying that Jesus had a wife and Mary Magdalene, had his child and was part of a blood line, that proves Jesus was only a man.

I was gobsmaked, granted it was an entertaing movie, but a little on the edge religously.

Some of the funniest lines on a film ever,

Brian: Excuse me. Are you the Judean People's Front?

Reg: F@@k off! We're the People's Front of Judea

On the question of what the Romans have done for us?

Reg: All right ... all right ... but apart from better sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths and public order ... what have the Romans ever done for us?

Brian's Mother: He's not the messiah. He's a very naughty boy!

Reg: If you want to join the People's Front of Judea, you have to really hate the Romans.

Brian: I do!

Reg: Oh yeah, how much?

Brian: A lot!

Reg: Right, you're in.

Wise Man #1: We were led by a star.

Brian's mother: Led by a bottle, more like.

Ex-Leper: Okay, sir, my final offer: half a shekel for an old ex-leper?

Brian: Did you say "ex-leper"?

Ex-Leper: That's right, sir, 16 years behind a veil and proud of it, sir.

Brian: Well, what happened?

Ex-Leper: Oh, cured, sir.

Brian: Cured?

Ex-Leper: Yes sir, bl@@dy miracle, sir. Bless you!

Brian: Who cured you?

Ex-Leper: Jesus did, sir. I was hopping along, minding my own business, all of a sudden, up he comes, cures me! One minute I'm a leper with a trade, next minute my livelihood's gone. Not so much as a by-your-leave! "You're cured, mate." Bl@@dy do-gooder

Wise Man #1: Ahem!

Brian?s mother: Oh!

[falls over in chair]

Brian?s mother: Who are you?

Wise Man #2: We are three wise men.

Brian?s mother: What?

Wise Man #1: We are three wise men.

Brian?s mother: Well, what are you doing creeping around a cow shed at two o'clock in the morning? That doesn't sound very wise to me.

The Crowd: The Messiah! The Messiah! Show us the Messiah!

Brian's mother: The who?

The Crowd: The Messiah!

Brian's mother: There's no Messiah in here. There's a mess all right, but no Messiah. Now go away!

There is an old story which goes like this - you have to keep the 'Jinn' busy or it will eat you. The moderates turned to fanatics - how, when and why did it happen ? Who used what military during cold war and is still has some use for it ? Who was responsible for legitimating the military by relating it directly to the religion (medieval tribal fanatism to motivate the army) so that at domestic level no questions are asked ? Therein lies the answer to all the how/when/why.

was to show that, although many of the 'items' were probably deeply offensive to many people (Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists) no one actually got KILLED over the outrage.

Mostly the upset was thrashed out on political forums, in religious publications or by peaceful protests and criminal charges.  Even in 1925 when Pakistani Muslims were up in arms,, no one DIED because of what they considered offensive.

It is only recently that violence has occurred and in each case it has been the over zealous Islamic factor.

To be honest, I consider some of the above films/books/artworks etc far, far more offensive to other religions than any of the subjects which caused Muslims to rise up and cause deaths over the matter.

Why is this the case?  What has happened to rational thinking?  Who stirs the mobs into this violent reaction?  Why is it more prevalent these days for Muslims to behave this way when they didn't over, say, Quran on Toilet Paper or the upset over the Cartoon depicting the English Cricket Captain being honoured by Mohammad in 1925?

I'm at a loss to understand the venom which is now displayed :(

I don't go out of my way to bait the religious only when they impinge on my universe and rights/freedoms.

As an artist we are more prone to thinking about constructs and juxtapositions as well as asking "why not". All of the above blasphemies (with the exception of the Qu'ran on toilet paper) are not downright malicios but have genuine artistic and philosophical merit - whether you like them is a matter of taste and how far you are willing to engage with the ideas presented. You can equally reject these artistic statements without calling for them to be banned.

You can joke about religion without being insultin, for example

PROOF OF THE NON-EXISTENCE OF GOD

The argument goes something like this:

"I refuse to prove that I exist," says God,

"for proof denies faith, and without faith

I am nothing."

"But," says Man, "The Babel fish is a dead

giveaway, isn't it? It could not have

evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and

so therefore, by your own arguments, you

don't. QED."

"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of

that," and promptly vanished in a puff of

logic.

"Oh, that was easy," says Man, and for an

encore goes on to prove that black is white

and gets himself killed on the next zebra

crossing.

But i have to admit the insulting ones still give me a greater belly laugh

I don't go to mythical places with strange men.

It is a matter of priorities...

Both of you value the freedom of expression more than the sanctity of religion and as it appears, so do most people in the West

But you have to respect others like most of us in the East who are less likely to poke fun at God and religion.  Most muslims value the sanctity of religion much more than freedom of expression.

No talk show host would ever consider pulling out a stunt like that in the Gulf.  Nor would the audience find it funny in this part of the world.

That is a fundamental difference between the East and the West...

I wonder if you would have been sad if they made fun of a druken Odin or something (more than a prophet....he is a GOD in some poeple's religion!)...but I doubt it, because despite professing to respect  ALL faiths, religions do not respect people's right to believe or disbelieve (the abrahamic ones only respect each other and pee on the rest for instance).

You didn't have to watch if you don't want to Hashin.....but there is something wonderful about living in a world where no one will be stoned or burned at the stake for doing something they thought was funny (and not harming anyone).

No one can tell you what is or isn't funny...but I for one am glad that they don't burn you at the stake because some religious nut is offended by your work or opinion or whatever....what century are we living in?

If you don't like the material, don't buy it/read it/watch it/or participate in any way, but freedom of speech does NOT mean that you must beware lest you offend others...it is the right to say what you want, EVEN if it offends others!

they laugh along with whatever is in the script.   If what you saw had been an isolated incident on the stage it probably wouldn't have made them laugh at ALL, but the fact that it was engulfed within whatever he was spinning in his yarn, and they were already primed to laugh at anything, they laughed!

People who incite people to kill...are the brothers of Cain - The guy who committed the 1st Murder.

That they are calling upon other to strike & kill a person who is in the same form & image of GOD is proof enough that they have been seduced by Satan.

Its just like if your finger is sore would you cut off your entire hand, even if somebody incited you?
