The Plight of Afghanistan Women

By gtim

It is a portrait of Aisha, a shy 18-year-old Afghan woman who was sentenced by a Taliban commander to have her nose and ears cut off for fleeing her abusive in-laws. Aisha posed for the picture and says she wants the world to see the effect a Taliban resurgence would have on the women of Afghanistan, many of whom have flourished in the past few years.

read the kite runner and a thousand splendid suns too. cried buckets of tears.

moonblues67's first post does make some sense though. in war both sides commit grave crimes against humanity. one side may be worse than the other's but that does not make them faultless. this is a very complicated situation and the situation might be more difficult when the nato forces leave.

I agree that Bin Laden is not the reason for us being there. Whatever the rights or wrongs, the time is right to get out. Let them sort out their own problems.

It will be interesting to see how long democracy lasts after NATO leaves..

By anonymous• 11 years 11 months ago.

The west have made a strategic mistake. What they need to do is pull their troops out now and then fund all the warlords. They will then spend the next 20 years killing each other while precious western lives can be saved. Job done. End of.

By anonymous• 11 years 11 months ago.

i objection on your comments

US and Nato's are not there for Bin Laden or Taliban, they are on a mission to solve most probably Domestic issues of an average Afghan, one of these nut is recently appointed General civilize, who has shown his interest in Killing Afghans for fun.

The US whould understand that while Afghanistan is indeed a basket case, it doesnt need to be their basket case. Their own reports have identified Laden to be somewhere in pakistan and not afghanistan, so the reason why they still need to be there is a mystery.

And no, I dont believe they would everbe able to bring the kind of freedom or democracy that they believe in, in that part of the world. Even if they (NATO forces) finish off the Taliban (highly unlikely), the moment they get out of there, the warlords are gonna bounce right back and stsrt the squabble. It is one part of the world which no amount of effort can make into anything other than what it has always been. A strife torn country. Started before Alexander, will continue to be, even after NATO.

Brothers & Sisters,

Who is ruling Afghanistan now? Is it Taliban or American forces? The ruling body is responsible to stop such criminal acts and if they are not able to do that, despite of having all the power over Afghanistan, then there is no point in staying there and complaining that Taliban did so and so.........

If they don't stop them, they are one of the culprits...

By mmyke• 11 years 11 months ago.

the majority of this brutality is conducted by people who profess to be God's chosen few?

What is it that keeps driving this behaviour whether they blame it on the westerners, the russians, and when there is no outsiders they do it against their neighbours, and when there are no neighbours they do it against their brothers and sisters.

Why is that??

I am a perplexed westerner who is constantly in awe of just how much violence there is in this part of the world.

Do you folks realize that the rest of the world does not act like this generally, ,,we do have wars to sort things out now and then, but never this level of ongoing hatred and violence??

Had the Muslim lands in question today who are in midst of all this war & strife, stuck to the Quran and Sunnah would they have found themselves in all this fitn?Would they have faced such terrible situations had they not fallen into extremism and innovations? Allah says: "And whatever calamities befall you, it is because of what your own hands have earned.. " Surah Sh-Shu'araa, ayah 30. knowing this can we Muslims then blame others? And the Prophet, Peace be upon him said “Indeed, I leave two things with you with which you will never go astray: The Book of Allah and my sunnah.” and warned “Hold onto my sunnah and the paths of rightly guided successors after me. Hold on to it tightly and keep away from the innovations in matters (of religion) for every innovation is heretical and every heresy is error.” and "The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) gave us a sermon by which our hearts were filled with fear and tears came to our eyes. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is as though this is a farewell sermon, so counsel us." He (S) said: "I counsel you to fear Allah and to give absolute obedience even if a slave becomes your leader. Verily, he among you who lives (long) will see great controversy, so you must keep to my Sunnah and that to the rightly guided (in beliefs and actions) Caliphs after me; cling to them. Beware of newly invented matters, for every invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is going astray and every going astray is in the Hell-Fire." [Musnad Ahmad vol 4 page 126, Abu Dawud 4607, at Tirmidhee 2676, ibn Mahah 42, Saheeh al Jamee 2546]And in many hadhit the Prophet warned that calamities will befall the ummah when they choose to follow other than his path.

So with all this in mind who do we Muslims blame for all our disasters? Americans? Or our own who choose to deviate & fall into extremism, error and oppression in their rulings?

Mohd Arif, if your are in Afghanistan, no need to ask for the witnesses, your fellow countrymen and even you have known their barbaric acts. For us, since we are far from that place our only source are news, with witnesses as basic evidence of these practices. People opinions basically based on news they received, but mind you there will be no news if there were no occurences.

We are not defaming Islamic beliefs, we are are just dicussing here barbarism done by this extremist who doesn't acknowldge the law of God for Humanity.

Who is to give witness that the Taliban have indeed did this act? Here in Aghanistan there is a war going on, the two parties are Americans with the West and the Afghans, the Americans are cowards and schemers, just to bring a bad name to islam and the taliban they plant such false stories. The American have infact killed 100's of thousands of women, children and the old by carpet bombings. Why don't photographs of those appear on TIME. What America is doing is infact digging its own grave, the resolve of the Muslim to end the Satanic domination of the world is increasing day by day.

Allahu'alim..for sure they are most seriously deviated at the very least. And yes they could very well be as you put it.The kind of people the Quran warns about. Its still saddening to see that many Muslims yet support them when in fact their actions and rulings are contrary to the Quran and Sunnah. There is no place for extremism in Islam and we Muslims must accept success comes in following the Quran and Sunnah regardless of how "harsh" or "lenient" one may find it. I pray for Allah to grant us all knowledge and actions that can take us to paradise..Aameen!

The Taliban didn't rule by the Sharia alone. This is a huge misconception. In fact when they came into power they burned books of many 'ulamaa namely Imam Abdul Wahhab, Raheemullah. They did this to prevent Muslims under their command from learning the true Islam. The Islam of the Prophet & his sahabah by the understanding of the correct scholars upon the haq. Taliban is a party of extremists who have their own deviated rules and penalties. They practiced takfeer and would judge a Muslim to be Kaafir simply cos he committed what was in their opinion a major sin but what may or may not have been so.In turn they would then put to death whom they pleased. Under their regime a woman who even exposes her face was put to death. They forbade their subjects getting the right education & instead taught them their misguided manhaj. Many scholars of the haq today speak out against them. The way they recruit too is scary. Never never attribute their actions to Sharia. They are far from the teachings of the Prophet Peace be upon him!
