Washington Post releases misleading infographic about Qatar World Cup

The Washington Post newspaper has released a misleading infographic about the deaths of workers in Qatar, specifically in relation to the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

This poor journalism by the US-based news organisation comes as FIFA officials face charges of money laundering, racketeering, bribery and fraud.

The report by the Washington Post (WP) however fails to make any mention of the call to suspend Israel from FIFA for discrimination and mistreatment of Palestinian footballers.

In the chart below, the WP compared worker fatalities in Qatar and other countries.

However, the Qatar figures include all deaths in the country since 2010, while the other countries are shown with deaths for the very specific event-related deaths on their construction projects.

According to the The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) that is tasked with all preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the "health and safety of every worker on SC projects is of the utmost importance":

"The SC is working closely with contractors to reduce the risk of hazards on construction sites and to ensure that all workers are provided with necessary safety equipment, free of charge, in accordance with the SC’s Workers’ Welfare Standards and Qatari labour law."

"If a safety issue is identified, SC health and safety specialists will work directly with the contractor to resolve the issue immediately, and to make certain it does not resurface in the future."

It does not appear if the WP or other western news organisations have referred to the relevant Qatari authorities as proper journalistic process would dictate.

The issue here is that Qatar's whole initiative of infrastructure upgrade includes and is closely intertwined with the construction for the World Cup.

"However, the Qatar figures include all deaths in the country since 2010, while the other countries are shown with deaths for the very specific event-related deaths on their construction projects." So, it's okay then that they died?

Why doesn't Qatar just release the death toll for projects directly related to 2022 then? And would that toll (like britexpat says) not include all deaths included in infrastructure upgrades/new construction that are being done to meet the demands of 2022?
