Blaze destroys labour camp

A FIRE ripped through a Doha labour camp yesterday – gutting the site and
sending property and valuables belonging to 600 workers up in smoke.
The blaze broke out at 1.30pm while the camp was all but deserted save for a security guard and a couple of other men.
No casualties were reported but as thick smoke filled the sky above Ain Khalid, many workers raced back to the camp to find all their worldly goods destroyed.
“I came home about 3pm and tried to go inside as I
have money and personal belongings inside, but it was too dangerous,” said one labourer who works as a painter. “I have never seen such a fire in my five years here in Qatar.” According to the horrified labourers, who could only stand by as their belongings burned, a number
of men lost money in the fire. One man claimed to have lost QR2,600.
Another worker said: “The camp is home to hundreds of people. Now they have lost everything; all their personal belongings, their clothes, and even their money. Everybody is in a state of shock.”
The camp, belonging to HBK Engineering and the Power Cleaning Services, mainly consisted of temporary cabins that quickly became engulfed in the fire. Strong winds made it difficult to bring the blaze under control.
Within hours the camp was a blackened mess of twisted metal with the temporary homes charred beyond recognition.
Several cars were also destroyed.
An eyewitness said: “As the fire broke out during the day no-one was hurt as all labourers were away working. I dread to think what might have happened if this fire had broken out at night.”
The cause of the fire was still not known late yesterday.

Speed Comments:

Why the hell this always happens to these poor labourers only ??? This is the 3rd such incident in the year 2008 !!!

I feel pity for these labourers and wish to help them whatever I can.

Humble request to All Qlers: Please if anyone can visit the site and donate whatever you can, New or Used Blankets/Pillows/Bedsheets/Mattress/Clothes/Shoes/Dry Food items such as rice, cereals, grains etc...

They are in bad need of donations, they have lost everything and I am sure their sponsor will not provide them with eveything they have lost except few Qatari Riyal .... last time in another incident the sponsor compensated QR. 100 only to each labour !! Do you think this amount will help them to cover their loss ???

UPDATE:

I just spoke to one of the Manager from HBK Group of Companies and he was very pleased with our (QL members) initative and concern for their labours staff. He welcomed any kind of charity.

I am sorry that i didn't know of this issue until now. I took alot of trouble to go through each and every comment in this thread.

I want to thank and congratulate Mr. SPEED for the great job done.

In the language of Disaster management Mr. Speed assessed the situation, identified the needs, coordinated the response, appealed for relief and delivered aid.

He is a professional.

More to that he stayed focused on a very hot HUMANITARIAN ground. There were voices of strange tone from many sides which are against the principles of humanity, impartiality, accountability to the victims, neutrality. I have come to believe how much we destroy relief and aid when we associate it with other issues which won't help the victim so sooooon.

I am happy for you SPEED and never reduce the speed.

Scarlett, i am only replying to u to set the record straight...  to show the hundreds of people who browse this site, the other side of the coin. Personally, i couldn't careless for what u think....

I do know the westeners very well. Well thats a big statement to make, but i have lived in UK, USA and am currently living in australia. A part from that i have been around and seen a lot of places and people. How the white american settlers treated the indigenous red indians, then the black slaves, is no secret. How it was completely legal for australians to shoot to kill an indigenous aboriginal, if he enters their land, UNTIL 1971, is no secret again. How the aussies removed aboriginal kids from their familes, and put them in foster care with white parents, where they got sexually abused and physically tortured, is no secret again. How the britons and there queen colonised half the world, and left examples of brutality and cruelty, everywhere they went, is no secret . Heroshima, Nagasaki, Well you would argue that its all history, .....   The fact is the westerners in general and americans/britons (anglo origins) in particular have killed more people on the face of this earth than anyother race, and they  r still killing... So when you have a history like that scarlett,  do u think it gives u enough credibility to come and talk about human right issues in other countries.. when ure government started a conflict in iraq, that caused death of more than 15 million iraqies, and half million afghans, do u think u guys should still be talking about human rights... ?

lets talk about now...  good that u mentioned illegal migrants... ( the qatari version is contracted labour protected by law )  American Government itself keeps illegal migrants in the country because it needs them for cheap labour... and that is a well known fact. The last mayor of New york even wanted to give all these illegal migrants american IDs , so atleast they can be identified, so they can catch them if they commit crimes and stuff.  He didn't succeed, but it shed a lot of light on the scale of the problem.

Scarlett, People are living backhome without any identity, they are surviving, and thats the biggest proof that your country needs them, otherwise they wouldn't make any money. Your government  doesn't even deport them on a large scale, when they can. Americans argue that syrians should control the iraq syria border, and pakistanies should control the afghanestan pakistan border, so no terrorist can cross over, but when it comes to the american mexican border, america just can't control it ? Can it ? NO. A country that removed saddam hussein, taliban, defeated U.S.S.R, was victorious in the world wars, Can't control the american mexican border ? does that make sense to u ?  To me it doesn't , because it simply says that they need the illegal migrants. Wel why don't u legalise them ?? Why don't u give them an american standard of life ? why don't u let these people fulfill the american dream as well ???

The whole western world yelling about the labourers in GULF, all  those documentaries, all those interviews..... Whats the reason ? The labourers have been here for atleast 35 years now. Whats all this fuss about , now ? after 35 years ?  Not many people know whats the real agenda behind this western propaganda... America is going broke, hehehe , UK, well its going bust too, businesses are going abroad,  money is going out of the country, , in Simple words , AMERICA especialy is getting poorer every single day that goes by.... there is no solution to this economic crisis, the fake american dollars without any gold backing...  its bound to fall in a recession, a bad one, and it would be no surprise, if follwed by the recession, we see something like we saw with U.S.S.R in 1990.  Uptill now, the westerners only took up white collar jobs, in arabian gulf. The tradies in the west could make enuff money in their own countries,  and they were happy, and we were happy with our labourers and they were happy with us .  Now the good days for the blue collar work force are over in america and most of the west. Most of them would need to come over to arabian gulf to make some money. They can't come over in the present conditions. Money is just not enuff for them. Thats why we r seeing all this propaganda about the labourers, and calls for better money and better standards.... better living conditions .... If we start paying 5000 Riyal for a labourer, half the eastern europe would be here in the gulf, ... if we came up with job ads for brick layers and concreters , with salaries of 10000 riyal a month, including accomodation and food, half the american red necks would be here.....

So my dear labourers, all these sympathisers calling for better standards for youse, they are not ure friends, cuz as soon as the standards go up , their work force will enter the market, and u guys will go jobless , back home....  cuz when the wages rise, expectations rise, saftey requirements rise, jobs get complicated, a brick layer only lays bricks, and a concreter only mixes concrete, as if its rocket science... thats what we call improved standards, and for the iliterate workers of south asia, there would be no place in the new improved system with the higher standards.... and when all the current labouers go jobless, getting replaced by western workforce, there would be no calls for human rights as well.

So thats the real story Scarlett. U accuse of of spouting propaganda.... guess what , i just told u another real story,  if u think its not true, than u don't know whats really going on,  in that case i really feel sorry for u .

before you go off spouting about how westerners should do for their own countries..think again...Personally, I HAVE worked in horrible conditions to help the people who had no education, food, basic personal items and I lived with them, meaning I lived without heat, electricity and water that ran only when it happened to feel like it. Its called life experience..living outside the comfort zone.

As far as you saying the comparison to hiring someone in India at the standard pay for India is the same as doing it here, is ludicrous at best. The cost of LIVING in India is much cheaper than it is here..plus they DO get to live with the families. You pay someone here what they got back home won't pay to get them rice for a week, not to mention meat or vegetables or necessary personal items here.

Um, you say the workers are damn happy here working for the pay they get...how do you know that..have you stopped and ASKED or even talked to them?? I have...for the most part, they are very nice and modest people who are living at poverty level, and no, they are not damn happy...would you actually be???

Obviously you don't know many of us westerners very well, or you'd know that most of us DO care and have sent aid to these countries and feel for them...or at least done the best we are ALLOWED to do. As far as leisure time..let me see...I'd have to guess you have a lot of it yourself, right? So how do you spend it??? I choose to help others with mine....

As far as being compassionate...when it comes to family...obviously yours doesn't extend to other nationalities...""Well We do not want these people to live here forever. They are contracted labour, and we would be really happy if they come here , work and return in 2 years, after saving some money."" Again..I ask...how would you handle being away from your family for years at a time..in which, your parent, sibling, etc...could pass away or be seriously injured, and you can't return home because its not your "time" to go back.

I still do NOT see how you can say the employees have no problem with the way things are being run..some are deported on whims, left in airports with no way home, work for bonuses that never appear, etc...nothing like walking through life with blinders on your head. I pity the people who have to deal with you in real life, if they ever come to you with a serious problem.....might want to remove those rose colored glasses also...because the other side of the coin isn't very pretty when you look at it in reality.

Human abuse in other countries...yep, we have a lot in southern USA,and a lot of it is because the immigrants come into our country illegally(basically walking across a very shallow river) and aren't protected by our government, against abuse. We have those individuals who use the immigrants' desire for a better life, to line their pockets, with total disregard for human life. Yes, we are working on how to fix those issues, as I'm sure other countries are too...but we do admit our faults also and make them public, and also imprison those that break the laws concerning human trafficking or abuse..

So..in closing Jaseem...until you walk the walk, don't talk the talk. Get down in with those that you say are so "damn happy" to be here working for next to nothing and living in conditions that most people wouldn't put an animal into. Get your hands dirty and MEET some of these people and talk with them...THEN, make a decision instead of sitting back in your comfortable house and telling everyone how wonderfully they are treated.

I'm sorry if I come off sounding like I'm lecturing, but when someone comes on and spouts propaganda like you do...its truly sad...Its arrogant attitudes like yours that can gives Qataris a bad impression to the rest of the world. That is really sad because every single one that I have met and known, and that's quite a lot, have been the most generous and kind people...So, if image means that much to you, then learn from personal experience and then come back and tell everyone what you learned, instead of being arrogant.

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.

As you are still very young, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here and go light on you but..what you need to know is that as you grow older and more experienced with life, IMAGE is nothing...real life, is everything.

Have you ever tried living like these workers have been living here in Qatar??? If not then I'd suggest you go and visit them in their living conditions and try it out for a while. Yes, it MIGHT be a bit better than they had where they came from, OR it might be that they were promised a better lifestyle, didn't get it, and then were stuck here due to not having air fare to get back. No, techinically they are NOT slaves..but depending upon who they work for and how lenient/honest their direct boss is, can make or break a man.

I believe the State of Qatar DOES have a duty to these people to provide them with a specific standard of life, otherwise, you end up with the situation that you currently have at some of the labor camps. Everyone should be able have some minimum requirements for workers living conditions and pay.

You said...

""But, an important note, We in Qatar would never pay labourers more than we can afford. Its not in our interest that these people come and reside here with their families. the state doesn't owe them anymore than what is mentioned in the labour law. After all the state doesn't tax them.""

It IS in your interest that these people come and live here...in fact, your country RUNS on these people living here and working for YOUR country. Most of them can't have their families over here with them...have you looked into that?? Can you imagine living here for 5 years without your spouse or children, or at your age...your parents and siblings??? Most of them don't go home with the money provided travel home, but send it home to their families to help out there. And...good thing the state doesn't tax them as they couldn't afford it...

I will tell you one thing I know directly...someone that I know told me that they live in one bedroom of a villa that several folks share...the family, including their children, are all back home...rent jumped from 500 riyals per month to 2000 Riyals for ONE BEDROOM...and she is one of the "lucky" ones over here that doesn't have to live in the working camps.

So, before you go on spouting how they are doing better and how lucky they are to be here...try walking in their shoes for a while and see how LUCKY you think they are after that. Try lowering your arrogance a bit and stop looking down the end of your nose at them..you'd be surprised what or who you see when you look beyond the end of your nose.

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.

Is this true?

Only a few people had their stuff lost in a fire?

Only a few cabins?

I was lead to believe that it was much worse than that and 600 workers lost alot...

Dear speed, Scarlet and well wisher

Today morning i visit with ROTA representative HBK Power cleaning camp , we spoke with General Manager and Project coordinator , they show the all what happened and where happened and fired aria + he brief us about looses i got these point from them

1. Every things under controlled its small challenge for them.

2. Only 7 cabins were damaged by fire and there were 80 workers rooms was damaged only rest of room under controlled( or ok as usual)

3. Workers are already shifted to the safe camp and working as usual.

4. Only few workers cloths and others items burn .they already give money , cloths and food free since fired.

5. Financial controller is calculating that how much looses by fire even they are keeping record who loosed money and ornaments also.not only that they will give money as worker clamed .

6. They will not accept any help or charity individuals and organization because i wrote before its sheikh’s company not ordinary business man’s company.

7. They are very upset with what happening outside that because of fire some peoples are collecting money ,cloths and food stuffs

8. Managements and worker’s both did not ask for any help.

I humble suggest you guys,

1. Do not distribute any donation or stuff unless managements or workers ask for help

2. If you really wants to help there is thousands of other workers seeking help ( low paid workers, long time not been paid salary, living in poor condition with out health care facility, not provided RP by company , waiting their sponsor in the Doha airport since 3 /4 days) lets say abandoned .

3. Be sure don’t do any thing which will be punishable for you and other well wisher by Qatar Labor law

4. Think twice doing anything before

Other information other more information send me PM.

If their is anything My husband and I have learned it is that people need to feel valued in their careers.

The only aspect I would like to mention is if those workers had it any better in their own countries then why have they come to Qatar to work in such dreadful conditions? Despite that, no human should be treated unfairly and taken advantage of because he is willing to put up with appalling conditions for the sake of feeding his family.

Please remember that making a difference in a persons life is taking their cirumstances into consideration and improving it all around. Qataris would be doing this by providing workers with better living conditions, free food, 1 return flight a year, paid vacations, and enough pay that they would have made back home and plus some to cover clothing and entertainment in Qatar. Research shows that a happy and well paid workforce is always the most efficient and productive.

I also wonder how expensive it would be to have some of those spray fans when on building sites. As well as water bottles, sun block, hats, and plenty of shade! Cheap solutions when buying in bulk! And Qataris will be the best compared to UAE in their treatment of the workers too!

This is not my first and like Scarlett I believe very much in what I do and more important I don't have much myself, but the little I have over I would rather give it to the poor and needy not the rich an greedy.

One more thing that should be mentioned here - the most valuable thinf which we all have in common is time - and to all those who help and support such a thing it is well worht it in the end -whether you get a thank you or not. Every effort is a donation to mankind and without this the world would be hell for all.

All who take part in such activities invest in a better future for the world, so lets invest.

Try to understand please ... this is our 1st experience to do charity work locally for needy people specially at the time of disaster !

If we continue this way, Inshah'Allah (God Willing) we will grow on Internal Level one day ! who knows ?

But we have to keep our faiths high and work as a TEAM ... We are not doing it for Qatar or India or UK etc... we are doing for humankind for those in need !

I have done several charity works while my stay in UAE. Earth Quake in Pakistan - Kashmir/ Iran .. Tsunamiin Indonesia etc...

We pray to Allah (GOD) these thing don't happen but reality is that natural disaster or accident cases do happen around the world.

God has given us this opportunity to help our brothers and sisters around the Globe regardless of Nationality/Religion !

If 1 million people donate ONLY 1 Riyal don't you think it's enough money for any poor country to build a small school/hospital etc...

Yes it makes a big difference but only when ? When we have no difference within us !

Seemingly you changed your attitude, labourers are not even considered here as human beings, and as Scarlett already said in light of your youth, you have probably never worked a hard days work in your life.

These people are building your country for you, or how many Qataris are brick layers, for that matter street cleaners, or any other menial working taskers. Yes they are contracted labour and should be treated as such, not live in holes such as many do.

One thing you are right about there are Human Right issues in every country, but for my part because I live and work here and am a great lover of Qatar, I hate to see it's reputation go down the drain in foreign countries.

There are many issues that the government has to solve and I do believe they are trying but many of the new laws have holes in then like a Swiss Cheese. If the employers would look at the issues more closely they would see what is in front of their noses.

Many of these labourers paid a lot of money to have the chance to go and work abroad, they were lied to and cheated and not to mention of course the ones who are left on the airport without food and water. What about the labourers who are just abandoned, I have seen this with my own eyes and yes I do think Qatar should provide for them in my country they would.

You are not a labourer and I hope you never ever have to suffer their plight - which you most probably wont, but your very comments of yesterday make me ill and show you are not even in contact with the reality of the working world.

I do have an opinion and I would like Qatar to have a good reputation all over the world, also I would like my friends to come an visit, but if they do and see this misery, how can I explain it. Don't get me wrong we have miseries in our own countries but this is consdiered to be one of the richest countries in the world.

Think of that and think of how many poor labourers sweat and blood went into building your city when you present it to the world.

Canarybird .... Most of your comments don't deserve a reply. Your opnion and you are entitled to have one. I do feed camels when i am in qatar. They are a part of my tradition, my heritage, and my culture, i am proud to be a camel feeder, and i do find camels beautiful. Also, i find myself fortunate, when i am able to handle difference of opnion, criticism, whatever u call it, with a smile on my face without taking things personally.

Scarlett ... Thanx for going light on me. When i say State of Qatar doesn't have a duty to give these people specific standards of life, i mean importing people from abroad and giving them these standards. The whole wages issue, lets look at it from a different angle. Say i am a Qatari in india, and i get a person to work for me in india. I will pay him the standard wages in india. Now say, i offer this person 5 times more money, in return for a sacrifice, that he has to come over and work in qatar. Also i will provide him with accomodation, and in most cases food, unless i am really stingy. Whats wrong with that ? Its everyday business. When this worker comes to qatar, he is damn happy, he is making 5 times more money. More than what he would have ever made in his country. But then we have the newly arrived westners, having a lot of leisure time on their hands, thanks to the easy working conditions in qatar. These people, although they fail to see the human sufferings in iraq, palestine, and afghanestan, their hearts cry at the "PLIGHT" of these labourers. They try to make the whole issue from zero to a big deal. Yes there are problems, and the ministries are dealing with it. Government doesn't have a magic wand to solve everything in a flash. Things take time. U asked if i can imagine living without a spouse or kids for 5 years ? Well We do not want these people to live here forever. They are contracted labour, and we would be really happy if they come here , work and return in 2 years, after saving some money. New people can come and work here after the old ones leave. Thats why they r considering a 6 years residency cap on these workers.

I guess what people have to understand is, these are a seperate category of contracted jobs. Contracts are mutually agreed upon by both parties. The jobs are in qatar, hence the workers have to be in qatar, when the job finishes, the worker goes. They do not have to live here forever. They do a job and they get paid for it.

I guess i am just talking to the wrong crowd. Why ? Because there are only 4 parties involved in the issue. The Government of qatar, qatari employers, workers and their respective governments & embassies. All these parties fully comprehend whats going on, and have no problem with it. Its only the bystanders who r yelling, people who have got nothing to do with the issue. Chartity Indeed bagins at home, so i will urge all the expatriates to look for human rights abuse in their own countries, in USA, UK canada, newzealand, australia, all these countries. I am sure they will find a lot of examples there, and perhaps they can do something to fix problems backhome. Meanwhile we will fix problems in Qatar, and together we can change the world.

Does it have to be brand new...

I could go and buy some drums of powdered milk...

but I have stuff at home: kettle bedsheets towels pillow that I hardly use that I dont want.... they are super welcome to have these things.

So we meet up 6.30pm/8.30pm... do we go to the labour camp from there.

I would like to go. I think I am whining a bit lately I need to see how well off I am. I need a metaphorical slap round the face with an old kipper or as the gringos say 'a reality check'.

what about a donation from the many charities collecting here? Or maybe a little something from the government??

By Oryx• 12 years 3 months ago.

Your post is one of the most arrogant/ignorant ones I have ever read on QL...(well since yesterday when eco wrote 'everything was going smoothly for the Taliban until the invastion)

Anyway go live for one week in a labour and do their work... and maybe you will learn some humility and think 'their for the grace of God go I'

a) many workers are duped

b) rubbish conditions in another country doesn't give Qatar the right to exploit their citizens

c) Qatar can so it should be at the vanguard (as it is in education etc) of human rights in the middle east.

Now that is the polite version.

Its alright Canary because I understand where you are coming from and I can also see from your words that it's coming from the fact that you see the potential in Qatar.

@EVERYONE,

Could you please PM me with what you'll be doing and your names? I just wanted to make a page of appreciation to all the people that are helping out (both from ILQ and QL)

My post is not meant to offend you personally, I feel Qatar has a great responsibilty to those building their country for them, they will leave and you will stay, but the damage to the reputation of Qatar will never be repaired. The widespread greediness of businessmen will is renowned world wide now and will never be repaired either.

Human Rights - why did they not spring immediately into action - why do you have to call and ask them. These laboureres needed aid two days ago??

Qatar Charity - although known for their resources and support world wide - charity begins at home too. It is illeagal for us to collect money and give it to the labourers so advisable to give food and clothing - Qatar Charity has endless amounts of that - again charity begins at home.

Goverment - is responsible for the safety and well being of all who are resident and working in Qatar that is the responsibility of the Government - this is a reputation worth saving don't you think.

Take your own words to heart, I have been ans seen labour camps ofdeserted labourers, I have seen victims already of fires. These peope are building your country, because:-

1) Qatar does not prooduce labourers.

2) Qatar only produces managers.

3) Human Rights does not exist in Qatar only when and internationl conference is in and about the country!!!!

4) Camps are in an anti social state thank you Qatar Government!!!

4) Qataris Business men are greedy and sucking labourers.

5) Don't even speak about newspapers - because before the newspaprs know the expat community knows the news.

6) Nothing to do what they get and earn at home at home they are working HERE that is important to them.

7) They are not privelaged to work in Qatar - they were lied and cheated too by agents who are employed by Qataris and this before they ever left their country. Who are you kidding. They are treated worse than beggars.

8) Qatar is donating to the wrong places at the wrong time - the old saying goes charity begins at home - am I right

9) OK you have 8 Qataris donating out of how many hundred thousand. How many expats are donating.

I am furious that Jassem would even thinks to write such a post about labourers - how arrogant of him and how cheap oh him considering their position.

I am a great lover and a great believer in Qatar but when I read such posts it reminds me how many arrogant locals you have.

What has he done for his country and to serve his country that you protect him?????? - don't you know that fatherland comes first. did he lay a brick for Qatar no he wrote a sh****t post for Qatar. I would like to give him one day working as a labourer and let's see how he thinks about the situation no food no water 12 hours of heat and a bus with no air conditioning!!!!.

I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am and how sad this makes me there is no beginning!!!!!!!

By Scarlett• 12 years 3 months ago.

first of all, thank you for your(and your friends') help with things here...donating of your time and money/teeshirt/phonecards, is wonderful thing to do.

Second of all....thank you for trying to explain a bit more about where jaseem MIGHT be coming from. perhaps it was just his wording or mannerisms that came across as very arrogant, as most Qataris I know are not like that.

I understand why charity organizations have to be legal because the opportunities to misuse them is incredible these days. Sad, but true.

Thank you so much for letting us all know what is being done and some of the ideas and mindsets here in Qatar..Wish I read enough Arabic to read the local papers...but I don't....translations can be such a tricky thing!!

@Canary, don't take things into deep effect. I thought you knew me better too.

Yes perhaps we didn't agree with Jassem's views but it wasn't right to say 'you'd be a camel feeder'. (which is quite broad and implies that Qatari's would be camel feeders')

If I had to be positive and guess what he was trying to say, he was saying "Although they are getting low salaries, they are getting a higher salary than they would get at home and its their choice to come here". Obviously we can also argue that they don't really have a choice.

Although I'm the only Qatari who's posted to help, 8 are helping out. (They don't use QL)

Yes you are right, it is forbidden to have an unregistered charity.

What I'm doing isn't a charity though ;) People are donating to ILQ and ILQ is doing what it wants with the money. I just so happen to want to buy stuff for labourers :)

So technically if you call it a charitable cause it's illegal.

You also said 'why are expatriates doing the job of the government'. We're not forced to do anything. Why do charities exist? Why are there aid missions. Why does the Qatar government donate one of the highest amounts to foreign help?

In Al Raya today, there was an article about this and it clearly said that the government is getting tired of corporate greed and the unjust conditions that Labourers live in.

Just remember that because Qatar is an arabic country, alot of the news is in arabic. It's up the Gulf-Times or the Peninsula to translate such news if you ask me.

I just called the Human Rights Authority and they said that they are setting up a form of aid for the labourers.

Try not to think so negatively, just because you haven't heard of something it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Please don't misunderstand my post, I'm not typing this with any sarcasm or negative tone.

Before posting me as a racist, check what your brother said - is this racist or not. Until now (don't project others) as far as I know you are the only Qatari who has posted help (forgive me if I am wrong) another thing I would like to bring to mind and just to you - if I am not mistaken - it is FORBIDDEN BY LAW TO taken any money for charity should it not be designated to Qatar Charity (Red Crescent)also such collections as we are doing are mainly forbidden according to the law!!!!!

If Qatar and the BUSINESSES IN QATAR ESPECIALLY THE SPONSOR WOULD INTERVENE AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY to what we call HUMAN RIGHTS there would no need for this kind of discussion and intervention to arrange help for poor labourers - why do the expats do the job of the GOVERNEMENT!!!!!

8) Kettle

9) Gas Cooker Small

14) Food - don't bring vegetables they will rot quickly

@Canary, just because Jassem said something you didn't like, you didn't have to be racist. It is also only for God to judge a person's opinions and actions.

It's not nice that when other Qatari's such as myself are helping and then you say that Qatari's are Camel feeders. (Unless you specifically meant him as an individual.)

They are building your country under the poorest conditions even less than they have at home.

How dare you, again how dare you be so unhumanitarium to the inhabitants of your country. Without any of these labourers YOU WOULD STILL BE FEEDING CAMELS IN THE DESERT>

"""Qatar should be appreciated for giving all these people better options in their lives, not blamed for their conditions.

ofcourse there are issues of labourers getting mistreated by their employers, and issues of reasonable accomodation, and salary as per contract"""

I offer you one day in exchange and to understand how they live and HOW HARD THEY WORK, if I was allowed to swear I would.

Get off your high horse and Qatar does have a duty to protect every person living inside their country this is where you are wrong and I would say my friend but your are an over privelaged und under educated person.

"Its nice to see such nice gesture from QLers. However, everyone is portraying these labourers as poor, which affects the international image of the state of qatar."

Check your grammer and spelling first of all, and yes they will damage the image of Qatar because Qatar can not build Qatar without them.

You came from the desert and you will go back there so Allah (pbuh) will you my brother and may Allah (pbuh)forgive you for your post.

Its nice to see such nice gesture from QLers. However, everyone is portraying these labourers as poor, which affects the international image of the state of qatar. We should not forget that regardless of how less money these people make here, its good enough to make them leave their home country and come work over here. They are not forced to work here, and they are certainly not slaves. They know what they are doing, and they choose to do it.

State of Qatar doesn't have a duty to these people to provide them with a specific standard of life. Especially when their home countries failed to do so. What we do have is an offer on the table for anyone willing to work here, for the salary and conditions we can afford. Now if people choose to take those offers, then certainly those are the best options available to them.

Qatar should be appreciated for giving all these people better options in their lives, not blamed for their conditions.

ofcourse there are issues of labourers getting mistreated by their employers, and issues of reasonable accomodation, and salary as per contract. The government is working on these, and making progress. Things are much better now, than they were a couple of years ago, and they will only get better for these people.

But, an important note, We in Qatar would never pay labourers more than we can afford. Its not in our interest that these people come and reside here with their families. the state doesn't owe them anymore than what is mentioned in the labour law. After all the state doesn't tax them.

By anonymous• 12 years 3 months ago.
anonymous

First and foremost they will need water because it will be hot where they are living so you will need a lot of water as well as food items.

Like all the others I wonder what the company is doing to support these poor labourers.

How many labourers are we talking about helping here and what is the company doing to help them with a roof over their heads and clothes etc.

Was there no insurance for the camp and if so I am sure the labourers will not see anything from it.

1. Allocate point of collection and gathers in different place

2. List out victim workers group wise, different nationality different group

3. Right stuffs for right people

By SPEED• 12 years 3 months ago.

I just return from the HBK Labour camp .... the situation is really horrible ...

1) most of the wooden rooms or houses are burnt into ashes !

2) No Electricity in most of the rooms which were saved and were near the fire area.

Now you can imagine their situation in the afternoon without electricity ?

I spoke to couple of the people there, one guy told me he saved QR.5,000/- in 4 years and he was planning to go to his home but now he cannot since all his money were burned in the fire.

Another guy told me that he purchased a gold necklace for his wife and he was also due to travel to his country next week but he lost everything which he purchased including a gold set...

I cannot tell you all those heartbreaking stories people were telling me ... I could easily see HOPE shining in their eyes from us ! I asked them what they need .. they said anything specially clothes/shoes/pillows/blanket and some food items !!

I assured them that whatever we can we will do for them and one Wednesday we (Qatar Living Members) are coming to donate them.

I took some snap shots of the fire I will be uploading them in few mins.

I am very happy with the concern of all of you as to the plight of these poor workers. As I read it correctly the most important thing these workers need is clothes as the company has rehoused them and the have a bed, blanket and 3 meals. So yes we need to collect clothes, shoes, underwear, caps, probably towels and other items like alarm clocks, tv, radios, soap, shampoo, washing power, and other daily items.I will see what we can do and will let you know.

I will pass along the information about donating to the Tuesday group tomorrow, should get more help that way. I can't believe the govt. doesn't do more to regulate the housing for labourers its shameful. Only when the conditions are filmed and shown in different countries do things change. Like the camel racing with 5 year olds as the jockeys it changed when an Italian film crew taped it. Shameful. I think everyone should also put pressure on HBK engineering. But could easily burn down the whole labour area, they really need more water storage or water tankers out in that area for just such a tragedy.

SPEED and others - my family and I drove out to the fire campsite as well as the "new" campsite where the 200+ men have been moved. There are still men at the burn site but they were not affected by the fire. The "new" campsite is in the Industrial Area and it is actually nicer than the burned site. More apartment like. All the men have been given a bed, mattress and quilt by their manager. They are also given 3 meals a day.

I'm sure these men, fire or not, would be happy to have any donations but from we saw and were told, clothing is the biggest need. Underwear, socks, shoes, clothes, etc. Extras I guess would be small radios or TVs if anyone is interested in donating those. They do have electric.

I can post directions on here or PM Speed. Just let me know. I also have the phone number of the HBK Camp manager if needed.

I just gave away a bunch of stuff, but will scrape together some more, or go out and buy. Have to work the next 2 days, but will check back here to find out what the greatest needs are and where I can drop the stuff off.

Thanks to you all for doing this!

Thank you for your concerns and coming forward in this charitable cause ! May God bless your ALL !

Well, don't think your post is gone unnoticed ... i am collecting as many info as possible then i will compile all the post tonight or tomorrow morning to see who said what and who need transport help.

Canarybird, sure i will contact you if i feel we are overloaded with donation ! it will be a great help.

Regarding my idea about transport (pickup) from HBK ...we will arrange transport only to collect the items from people house or offices ... PLEASE note i have not spoken the HBK about this transport this is just an idea and I will speak to them in few mins. If they agreed, i will collect details of Qlers and send the driver to their places for collection. If they don't then i will seek your help in this regards.

We need to do this on urgent basis. You can also request your friends/ relatives/ office colleagues etc.. to come forward and contribute anything they can !! PLEASE ... REMEMBER they are 600 labourer who lost their everything .. they have nothing to wear/no shoes/no towels for bath/ no mattress, pillow, blanket to sleep 600 people ? GOD Help them...

I will be visiting the site today and see how is the condition myself ! I will update you... by then I am expecting more donations PLEASE ...

Keep your items ready we will decide collecting point very soon with coordination of KE/Scarllet/Owen and Mila ... you may contact them directly thru PM.

Pls. do pay a visit to that site and try to speak to the labourers that what the need most to start with their new life !

I am coordination with HBK Group manager .. once we are ready then we will invite him to the SITE not to his Office.. we will give our donations to the responsible person of HBK who knows their labours and their needs.. we will handover the items in presence of the labours !!

That is why I invited Qlers to come forward and witness the donations and handing over in a proper way.

Any more suggestions are welcome.

Also I will speak to HBK Manager to provide us with a pickup (if he can) so that we can send that pickup to those Qlers who wish to contribute but do not have transport facility.

STILL LOTS OF QLERS ARE SLEEPING ? SO SAD !!! Specially those most active ladies chasers where are you ,,, leave the ladies alone and come forward to help NEEDY PEOPLE !!

I spoke to the man listed above and he said the men are still living at the burned out camp and we can drop off donations there after 3pm. I'm going to drive by there today and make sure this is the case. Hard to believe it's still liveable after such a fire but I wonder if it really ever was liveable...

Hi KE.. Sorry i think you understood me wrong for somepart.. I know you are not asking for money but for stuff from whom ever will give it..

I just thought that maybe we can give it directly to the labours and not the company.. Sorry maybe i have some trust issues with the company...

So i hope we can give directly to the people.

Thanks KE.

I will go around the compound here and see if people will donate some stuff they can miss.

But let me know when it will be collected??

referring to another incident where the labors got only 100 Q.R after what happened ... that is why WE made our invitation open with anything ... we will not ask any to pay anything ... if you feel like paying then it is ok, if you can buy some stuff and give it to them it is also fine, if you have old stuff to give that it also fine ... WE just want to help so anything you feel that it would be good to help them is fine ... and good and would be appreciated ...

Thanks All .... Still looking for more, want to hear from more ... Come on ... we don't want to go 3 or 4 of us there ...

I have a question because maybe i don't understand right...

But why hand everything over to that HBK if they don't make a good donation themselfs?? It's "their" people and they don't do anything for these labours.. o yeah.. just donate 100 riyal to each person.... Sorry i guess i am some what upset about this idea.

I think maybe we can give it strait to the labours??? So they know that we are there to help them??

So they housed their workers in accommodation that didn't meet basic health and safety standards? is that the case... because it sounds like a shanty town.

They should be fined at least 1000QR per worker for the trauma if that is the case.

Our support is wonderful but these sponsors must be held accountable for this type of treatment.

I suggest we visit the site and call the Manager of HBK Group and hand over all the donation to him along with other Qlers.

I think we should finalize this by Wednesday 30.04.2008 !!! rest whoever wish to donate they can contact HBK company directly as mentioned above.

go home to check everything that i got and we will talk about it ... are we supposed to deliver those to that place or to their sponsors place? Depends on I guess and we need to at least agree on one place so all can drop their contribution and we can just directly move from there to the meeting place with their company or them ...

to just organize our stuff and just deliver it .. If we will make it simple, then it would be faster ... it would be hard to wait until Wednesday but still ok so we can gather as much as we can .. Guys please anything to help ... not necessary money and we are not asking you to buy something ... just anything that you can offer to help ... anything ...

If we will discuss the food thing then we have to collect some amount, buy some basic stuff like Rice, Sugar, Tea, Oil, Milk ... just big bags and deliver it ... the plan can be on stages ... not necessary all in the same day ...

Where is the rest of QLers? I can see only Scarlett, Owen, Speed and Mila ...

is there anyone there that can make sure it gets distributed where it needs to go, instead of just handing it to whomever is out there?

Its also very difficult to think that a company, who's livelyhood depends upon the work and sweat of these people, could only given each one 100 riyals each...that's pitiful....how can the sleep at night knowing what they do???

Also..WHERE exactly is this, so we can go donate...
