B1 bomber crashs in Qatar?

Anyone else hear anything about this?

Update on the plane that crashed
The B-1 Lancer that crashed in Qatar costs approximately US$283.1 million. It is an American supersonic strategic bomber and there are only 67 66 currently active.

Update via Al Jazeera:

A US military aircraft has crash landed at the al-Udeid military base in Qatar.

The B1 bomber reportedly suffered technical difficulties and exploded as it attempted to land at the base about 35km from the capital Doha late on Friday.
There was no immediate information about casualties from the incident.

The B1 Lancer is a supersonic, long-range bomber which carries a crew of four people.

Last month, a B-1 bomber slid off the runway at Anderson Air Force base on Guam, crashing into a group of emergency vehicles. The military reported that there were no injuries and no fatalities as a result of the accident.

Urban legend or not... and I still don't think it is..

Last I am going to say to you on the matter...which is good because even I am getting tired of your battering Texas and my rebuttal.. and for the record..your sense of humor isn't funny on the matter...sarcastic or not...maybe I'm just being prickly right now, but it isn't humorous to me at all..

It is a common urban legend that the Texas flag is the only state flag that is allowed to fly at the same height as the U.S. flag. Allegedly, Texas has this right inherently (as a former independent nation) or because it negotiated special provisions when it joined the Union (this version has been stated as fact on a PBS website[3]). However, the legend is false. Neither the Joint Resolution for Annexing Texas to the United States nor the Ordinance of Annexation contain any provisions regarding flags. According to the United States Flag Code, any state flag can be flown at the same height as the U.S. flag; the U.S. flag should be on its right (the viewer's left), however. Consistent with the U.S. Flag Code, the Texas Flag Code specifies that the state flag should either be flown below the U.S. flag if on the same pole or at the same height as the U.S. flag if on separate poles.[1]

At some Texas Army National Guard armories, only the Texas flag flies on the flagpole during the dayParticipant South East Asia War Games

sorry for the hijack folks..setting something straight here..

The people from other states that came to help our independence did so out of the fierce loyalty to where they ended up purchasing land. Davy Crockett's wife is buried up near Ft Worth, where his homestead still is...When Mexico gained ITS independence from Spain..they started selling off land in Texas for about 10 cents an acre..so that's why people from all over the States came to Texas to settle..then the battle for independence ensued. Texas is the ONLY state in the US that was once its own country..which came about after we won our independence from Mexico. We are also the only state that can fly its flag at the same height as the American flag, for just that reason.  So....unless you are ready for a history lesson each time you poke fun at someone, think twice.OR...read up on the history BEFORE you start in on someone.

As far as being fun to pick at us...we can take a joke as long as that's what it is....and at least we HAVE a huge pride in our state...some people just don't really care.

A B1 bomber in air over Wyoming, Us

A B-1 BOMBER belonging to tForce caught he US Air fire last night at the Al Udeid Air Base, 35km south of Doha.

A spokesperson for the US Air Force Central Public Affairs Office, South West Asia, said: “The US Air Force B-1, while taxiing after landing at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, was involved in a ground incident and caught fire at 21.10 local time on April 4.

“The crew evacuated the aircraft and is safe. The fire was contained. A board of inquiry has been appointed and will investigate the incident.”

At the time of going to print, officials in Qatar were not confirming the incident and the Air Force Public Affairs Office was looking into local reports that a number of explosions had been clearly heard in parts of Doha at the time the B-1 caught fire.

An earlier report from Al Jazeera English said the B-1 had crashed.

Reuters also reported the incident citing a US Defence official as saying: “A B-1 crashed. We are investigating. We don’t know how many people were on board or what mission the bomber was conducting.”

Meanwhile, AFP said another official, who was travelling with Defence Secretary Robert Gates in Oman, had denied that the bomber had crashed, claiming there was “an explosion aboard a B-1 bomber on the ground”.

However, this failed to explain local accounts in and around the surrounding area of the base.

One source told Gulf Times: “I heard repeated loud explosions and the ground beneath my feet was shaking. When I ran out of my accommodation to see what was going on, I could see smoke billowing into the sky.”

Another source said: “I was at home when I heard a deep rumble like thunder. A few seconds later I heard it again, and then one more time. When I went outside I could not see anything, but I did hear a number of emergency sirens. I assumed there had been some kind of major accident on the roads.”

Although there was no comment from the authorities, the roads leading to the air base were closed to traffic, indicating an incident of some sort had occurred. Ambulances and police vehicles were also seen racing through Doha in the direction of the base.

Despite all the signs pointing to a major incident having taken place at Al Udeid, there was never any suggestion that there was a direct threat to the security of Qatar and no civilian flights were disrupted at Doha International Airport as a result of the incident.

The B-1 is a long range bomber capable of flying intercontinental missions without refuelling and is able to penetrate sophisticated defensive networks.

The B-1, which was estimated to cost $283.1mn in 1998, was conceived as part of the Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft (AMSA) programme around 1965.

AMSA was the last in a series of programmes through the 1960s that looked at replacing the B-52 Stratofortress with a multi-role supersonic aircraft capable of long-range bombing and missile launching with nuclear weapons.

A series of cancellations led to its service introduction being greatly delayed, until the later half of the 1980s, over 20 years after the programme first started.

Last month, a B-1 bomber slid off the runway at Anderson Air Force Base on Guam, crashing into a group of emergency vehicles. The military reported that there were no injuries and no fatalities as a result of the accident.

The $1.4bn Al Udeid Air Base is the home of the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing of the US Air Force. It has the longest runway in the Middle East — 3,751m.

It is estimated that about 3,300 US troops, mostly army, plus pre-positioned equipment, are stationed in the base.

The base can accommodate up to 120 aircraft. Early in the Afghanistan campaign, F-16 fighters and E-8C Joint Stars reconnaissance planes that monitor ground units were based here, along with refuelling tankers.

Military research group Globalsecurity.org states that the base also houses the 44th, 340th and 379th Expeditionary Air Refuelling squadrons; 434th and 911th Air Refuelling Wings; and 93rd Air Control Wing.

which is why it is so much fun.

But.... I still have never figured out how anyone considers the guys from Tenn, NC etc. and parts unknown as Texans. Methinks they were a little less caring about independence than the locals.

and the stripe is to let people, especially those that have eyesight problems, of the varying depth of the ground variations upon which they are walking. I've seen some very bad falls due to this and its easily fixed. Another option would be to put those sanded strips on the edge of the step...I'm sure you know how slippery the marble gets when it has a very fine layer of sand on it... plus, it makes the step much more visible.

on the Texas issue..the line was put in the sand at the Alamo to show how many men would face almost certain death to be free from Mexico's rule.  Nothing like a 189 Texans up against around 6000 Mexican soldiers. Santa Anna was a very unfair and cruel dictator.

Majnoon..certainly hope you were being a bit funny sarcastic...you know how us Texans feel about our freedoms and Texas independence.  The Alamo is a symbol of courage in the face of overwhelming odds. Farmers and ranchers who were NOT soldiers originally, who gave their lives, are still honored as defenders of freedom.

Initial reports of a crash landing were inaccurate. Apparently the plane caught fire after landing. All crew on board were evacuated without any casualties.

like most things, this was, I'm sure, just one of those technical accidents..rather like a jet liner that gets crosswise in a wind shear...some things can't be helped. In those, the fuel tanks have the capacity to explode also, and have on many occasions, unfortunately..Qatar is a very peaceful land and I'm sure, will continue to be.

the Bush comment is total fabrication...and the bomb was a misfire from the base...the US base...and planes have landing issues all the time..don't worry...
