Beaches in Qatar - Location and GPS access.

By alija

Since it's the summer season, and with scorching temperatures reaching up to 50C, I wanted to share with you a list of beaches I regularly visit around here, as well as their access route and GPS coordinate (in standard format: LAT/LOND: hddd°mm.mmm'

Generally, beaches are safe in Qatar. In the summer season, one has to worry about jelly fish, therefore a lycra or neoprene skinsuit will do the job in protecting from jellyfish and sunburns. There are some stone fish that hide between the rocks of the the Northeast beaches of Qatar and they are mostly active during night. Sea snakes are now rarer, as their season is March till the end of May. Sea snakes are generally peaceful and not aggressive, unless harassed. As for sharks, there are sharks in the Qatari water (Tiger sharks, bull sharks, great hammerheads, blacktips, and around 23species in total). However, it's rare to sight sharks, even offshore, and it is virtually unheard of sharks approaching the beaches of Qatar where swimmers ventures (within 10-100m from shore). However, the greatest risk involving swimming in the Qatari water is the drive to the beach (mind you with the high number of traffic accidents in Qatar and the highway drive to the beach!!!).

1- Wakra beach: Nice and accessible by sedan car; however all the time crowded and not so family-friendly, since it can get very crowded with bachelor guys. Sandy beach (Easy to find from Wakra main road)

2- Sealine beach: Same as above. N24 52.007 E51 31.545

3- From sealine resort to the Inland sea: 4WD, GPS, and desert-driving experience is a must. Very vast area, and a continuous 50km of sandy beach. You can find very nice and secluded areas for you and your family. You must know how to drive in the sand to access that area.

4- Fuwairit cliffs: 4WD recommended, or you can access it by sedan car, but very rugged rocky terrain. Also very nice beach (rocky beach) and fantastic scenery. You can also access the beach south to Fuwairit cliffs, but be careful, as the area is a mangrove march, and if your car get bogged, you can get into serious troubles with the incoming tide.
Coordinate: N26 02.915 E51 21.597 (Fuwairit clift, and fuwairit sandy beach is 2-3km south of the clift).

5- South of Dukhan beach: Fantastic area, but a 4WD is necessary: To access it, you've to go past the club and up to Dukhan beach on the tip, and then drive around 2km south parallel to the sea. The area is deep sands with hard tracks to follow in sand areas. Sandy beach and clear water most of the time.
Coordinate: N25 22.169 E50 45.69

6- Zikreet: West Coast and Northern Coast of Zikreet Peninsula: Amazing area, you might also see the thompson gazelles and ostriches in that natural reserve. A nice old touristic village built there, in addition to the zikreet village at the entrance of the peninsula
Zikreet village: N25 29.165 E50 50.807
Touristic village: N25 35.187 E50 50.596
As for beaches, the area is full of beaches. You can explore the West coast and the northern coast for your favorite and secluded area. The West coast of the peninsula is mostly rocky (basalt volcanic rocks), and the east coast is mostly marches, and sandy so careful in the east coast.

7- Umm Bab beach: Went there once, not so and so... Area didn't look that clean. I hope that changed since 1 year.
N25 12.401 E50 46.067

8- Al-Ghariyah: 4km north of Fuwairit. A 3km long sandy beach. Accessible by Sedan car, but you'll have to avoid the patch of sands while driving with a sedan car so not to get stuck. N26 03.586 E51 21.384

9- Area from Al-Ghariyah resort up to Madinat-al-Shamal. Accessible by 4WD only. You got around 20km of sandy beach to drive and explore around. Very easy access. You take the road up to Al-Ghariyah resort, then drive up parallel to the sea in 4WD mode, but not to close to the sea) and find your favorite spot there. There are also coral reefs in that area (for you to find :) ).

Other areas:
Al-Aliyah Island (Bird sanctuary and nice beach on one side, and mangroove on another). However boat access is necessary.
Banana Island (Mishut Island): Also very nice beach & boat access is a must.
Al-Zakheera (Thakeera): 14km north of Al-Khor; Amazing mangrove reserve; flamingos, and other birds. Nice beach areas to explore around 4WD is a must.

Finally, note that almost all of those beaches here lack the most basic facitilies, so beachgoers must take all the things they need (water, food, mobiles in case some1 gets into trouble etc...)

Finally, feel free guys to correct me, or add any more beaches, and most important, have fun and be responsible toward the environment :) :) :)

Good Work Alija:

So which resorts are recommended along with beaches. I heard about Al-Ghariyah resort is the best; is that true. My parents and brother will visit me soon so therefore I need some good, clean and family places.

For deep sea fishing, I have plenty of those coordinates as well (wrecks, underwater cables, structures etc...) but those are too classified :P

Very helpful information.

Wish somebody would post the coordinates of good deep sea fishing spots.

Most GPSr's [Garmin, de Lorne, TomTom, etc] have the Internationally accepted default set and that is WGS84. If co-ordinates are given in QNG [Qatar National Grid] and your GPSr is set to the default - which is normally WGS84 - then you will find them to be approximately 160 - 200 metres out. QNG is really only used for official survey documentation and other geodetic documentation.

Qatar is one of the very few countries world wide that has its own National Grid. The reason therefor eludes me as the other countries that have such a grid are Russia [or the former USSR area], Canada and Australia. These are huge expanses of land that Qatar certainly isn't, but I am sure that somebody had a good reason to develop a home grown National Grid.

worked just fine for me. I use QNG or UTM on all of my Garmins.

For google earth, those coordinate will not work, as you need to convert them to Lat/Lond hddd°mm'ss.s" format (The format I posted here is the one that is used as standard for all GARMIN GPS).

for sharing this info with others. Since most of the area quite faraway, I'll recommend you guys to bring along sling/rope with shackle. In case you guys get stuck..it will be easy for others to pull you out quickly. 1st aid kit is a must.

thanks, I use my GPS for everything. For those that don't know, you can copy and paste these coordinates on Google Earth and you will be able to see the locations.

Great job thanks
