Harrods taken over by Qatari investors

By stealth

The department store Harrods has been sold for a fee of around £1.5bn, the BBC can confirm.

Owner Mohammed Al Fayed has agreed to sell the exclusive west London store to Qatar Holdings.
The deal was signed in the early hours of 8 May and should be announced within the next few hours, BBC business correspondent Joe Lynam said.

@ s_isale,selling it to the yanks whose version of 'football' is played mostly with the hands & involves an oval ball was THE biggest mistake the club has probably ever made, hopefully that will be rectified soon...with DIC & Saudi investment both still interested apart from a bunch of rich fans who've come together & offered to buy it out...now THAT would be something,a club OWNED by fans...we live in hope!!! :)

well pity Liverpool, initial interest was shown by DIC who got spurned and then they gave themselves to the Americans who have really put them into a tailspin.

@ whyteknight,EXACTLY my point,Man.City have gone from "who even watches them except for comedy" to a FIFTH place finish,a Europa League spot in ONE season after the takeover by Sh.Mansour & that is NO small achievement & no one truly interested in Premier League football would say they weren't following Man. City this season, so you're spot one,'no one' used to watch them but EVERYONE into football is sitting up & watching them now as a new world force to reckon with in club football,

they now have Tevez & a bunch of other world class footballers & it would be a brave person who'd say they won't finish top 3 next season...the WHOLE PLANET (or at least football fans the world over) is following this club & by default the individual that has taken it over & turned things around with his injection of funds,EVERYONE loves it when a bottom club breaks into the top 5,it adds variety & is a welcome change even if it's @ the cost of one of the bigger clubs,i say this as a proud & loyal Liverpool FC supporter,as hard as it's been to watch their performance this season,it's been good to see Man.City climb the table, now unless you're teling me Harrod's share price on the stock market generates similar or more interest,i don't see your point mate...like i said, the Egyptian turned out to be smarter than these guys,(surprise surprise),you do know their initial offer was refused? That refusal obviously hurt their ego & the last thing they would want is a headline screaming "Fayed turns down Qatar royal family offer." or some such eh? so they upped the offer & then Fayed agreed(exactly according to plan),now he can relax & enjoy time with his family & watch games @ his club, the one he OWNS,while these guys can have their corner shop selling Gucci & Christian Dior to fellow Arab tourists...yeah mate,i'm REALLY interested in knowing what Sheikha so&so from one of the GCC countries bought @ Harrod's last weekend, now that it's Qatari owned & all...please mate, give me a break eh?...

you make some very good points Gadarene, again Qataris have been taken for a ride and paid over the odds (but hey its their money), but its only a bloody shop....Man City has the world watching but who gives a toss that a shop has been sold....well done Fayed for fleecing the Qataris...

Comeon who even watched city before the takeover, well sometimes I did when I wanted to watch a comedy but that's just about it.

@ Whyteknight,i humbly beg to differ my friend, owning a Premier League club is membership of an exclusive club that NOTHING else can match & Harrod's is a posh store for richie rich people,Man. City like other top Premier League clubs has GLOBAL support, now unless you're saying Harrod's has fan clubs around the planet & evokes passion like nothing else in young & old alike,i don't see how a statement like "Harrod's has more tradition than Man. City" makes any sense...btw,Mr.Al Fayed ALSO owns a Premier League club (Fulham FC) which he (wisely) has kept & chose to sell the corner shop instead...tradition my a@#,NOTHING has more tradition that a top flight global centuries old Football club mate...

Robertothebraver

Well I guess they figured that they spend so much money on this corner shop each summer they might as well buy it....

But Harrods is not just a store gadarene, it has more tradition than Man C.

Was valued at 1/3rd of that price recently.

A shop vs. a world famous football club, with a HUGE number of supporters ALL over the planet, hmmm, tough choice eh?...

Paid over the top for this one and one feels that they have been taken for a ride by an egpytian and not for the first time.....

Should have spent the money on man utd that would have gotten them a lot more PR globally

It's not as big as owning a Premier League club like the Nahyan family of Abu Dhabi have smartly done with Manchester City, they've used their money power to take a middle-level club to a no: 5 finish in their FIRST season since taking over & i dare say a top 3 finish next season...not getting my point people?...Thanks City and thanks

Sheikh Mansour for putting

so much effort into my

club, our club, OUR CITY!!' this is what a young kid Man. City supporter said on the official Man. City site. So how is Qatar Holdings takeover ACTUALLY going to affect Harrod's?...is it going to personally affect the common man's life?...are sales going to suddenly shoot through the roof because of the takeover?...i think we can safely say they're not,the effect on the ground as far as the store is concerned will be new management, that's all,a new boss to get used to but no real change in the actual store itself...HOWEVER,that same change in management @ Manchester City suddenly has the world of football sitting up & taking notice of the Sh.Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan & the positive effect his takeover is having on this centuries old football club...there is spending money & there's WISELY spending it...if anyone from Qatar Holding is reading this, word on the street is that Liverpool FC is up for sale...or will be shortly...go on then, make a REAL investment...
