Man City Fans and Arabic Clothing - Discuss

Stork
By Stork

Hi All,

A lot of my friends back in Manchester are celebrating the huge investment in Manchester City Football Club by the consortium from Abu Dhabi.

Now, City fans have a tradition of going to big games in fancy dress. A lot of them are posting on forums about going the next match wearing the Gutra/Keffiyeh.

They are doing this in a spirit of celebration and gratitude, but some are worried they will offend the club's new owners.

So, what do you think? Are they likely to cause offence, or will the guys from Abu Dhabi see the funny side? Answers from people who wear the traditional Arab clothing would be particularly valued.

I'll re-post some of the comments on the City forums so the fans will have an informed view of opinions here.

Many thanks and Ramadan Kareem.

Oh yes, they will be very offended, of course, Arabs are always offended! Even if you mean to please them, they fly into a rage and will issue a fatwa against City and order Mark Hughes to play with the national team of Qatar.

no way ! It wouldn't insult us at all! Unless of course they meant it to insult and did something insulting.

I'd take it as a nice gesture.

Bring out a banner with a nice word and you'll make everyone happy!

Perhaps Doha will buy Man U lol

I don't know what a keffiyah is but I imagine that's a ghitra.

I'd love it if the west enjoyed wearing a thobe :)

Why should they be offended? These owners are worldly wise, cosmopoliton, educated and most of all martket savvy..

They realise that any puvblicity is good publicity..

Can't Qatar buy Tottenham?!

I don't know how widely-read this site might be, but Tottenham are a team on the brink of success, with a great history (first British team to win a European trophy, more European trophies in fact than any British team excluding Liverpool and United).

If it really is the City we know and love, he probably become offended, withdraw all the money, plunge them into debt, and they'll get relegated!

I'll tell you what, for a what is generally-speaking a notoriously insensitive social group, just shows what money can do to encourage respect and sensitivity amongst football supporters!
