MF Husain conferred Qatar nationality!

svelte_saggi
By svelte_saggi

India's most celebrated artist MF Husain has been offered Qatar nationality, according to a report in The Hindu.

The report said that Husain was “Honoured by Qatar nationality” but deeply saddened by his enforced exile and the need now to give up the citizenship of the land of his birth, which he has lovingly and secularly celebrated in his art covering a period of over seven decades.

Indian government does not allow dual citizenship, therefore, Husain will have to give up his Indian passport if he decides to take up Qatar citizenship.

The report also said that Husain did not apply for Qatar nationality and that it was conferred upon him at the instance of the modernising emirate’s ruling family.

The artist has been living in Dubai since the hate campaign against him started in India in 2006.

Fair play to qatar for offering the guy citizenship.

The thing about people getting their knickers in a twist over the work of one person, is that they are the ones who end up looking like fools in the eyes of the rest of the world.

The best strategy is to take it on the chin, laugh it off and ignore it. By kicking up a fuss India has focused the eyes of the world on it, and they will be judged by their actions.

The best part is the only place where MF Hussain can truly paint what he wants is in India. So I doubt if he will give up his Indian citizenship anyway. I agree that art is art and he should be free to paint what he wants, its just that some Indians are not very tolerant when it comes to messing with religion.

I cant believe that the moderators have not removed that semi-naked pic off this post yet!!! What happened to the family website qatarliving???!!!

in our hindu mythology, women are catagorised in 4 catagories based on their size and shape...especially the sexual organs..

the catagories, if i translate in english, are: rabbit, deer, cow and elephant.

a full blown buxom women is termed as 'hasthini' which means a female elephant..

probably, hussain meant that when he described madhuri..

By edifis• 9 years 2 months ago.

Genesis, the Hindus are not one entity. Don't bunch them please. And it's not about Hindus. It's a shame that you of all should bring religion into this matter. I had much higher opinions about you (from your posts).

It's about nationality. I as an Indian, am annoyed with the fact that a famous person like him would choose to relinquish his nationality of 95 years just because of a few foolish threats by some crazy radicals.

You have to consider this that when he was an Indian he had the full freedom of expression, which he used. The government had nothing against him. Corollary - A few Hindu fundamentalists have also their rights to express their dissatisfaction and voice their opinions against him.

Now that he has accepted Qatari citizenship, he has lost his right to "freedom of expression". He will now have to supress his artistic aptitude, and will have to paint things only which will be liked by the government.

By anonymous• 9 years 2 months ago.
anonymous

genesis ...honestly you dont know what you are welcoming...

He has even got into trouble with Muslim Organisations in India....

Then he was chasing a much married Madhuri Dixit on the pretext to do portrait and then finally did a movie with her...Gajgamini..lol:

The Indian Govt. imposed no bans or conditions WHATSOEVER on M.F.Hussain,seems like a lot of people here have the wrong idea/info. on that...we're the world's largest democracy with complete freedom of expression which means M.F.Hussain is free to paint what he wants just like the RSS or any other Hindu fundamentalist organization is free to express it's displeasure at those paintings...He can live in India but would need security all the time, something that a creative person like a painter would find very stifling,so he chose to live in exile...As for Qatari nationality,it's simple really,be it Kenyan long distance runners,Indian painters, whoever that has talent but has issues with their home country or wants more money, give them nationality,it's like announcing to the world,"we have no talent whatsoever so we buy the talent from other countries, like we buy everything else." but the fact remains that on the world stage, that runner will always be known as "the Kenyan guy Qatar bought to win medals for themselves" & similarly,M.F Hussain will remain,"the Indian painter that Qatar bought" NOT "local Qatari painter M.F Hussain",as much as these guys would wish it were that way or as much as they tell themselves that's how it'll be...sorry guys,it won't...

By deepb• 9 years 2 months ago.

I don't believe the thread is about Taslima. I for one, have not even heard about her. If there was a threat she might have been provided security. In M.F Hussain's case the threats were not very serious, yet he was provided with security. He just felt the security was not enough, and left the country, instead of asking for more.

You can't stay SRK/Big B forever in Indian cinema if you're so used to it and wanna explore more, like The Blue Umbrella or going back to classic Kaagas Ke Phool, are we?

iCE You should know that Qatar Govt always makes wise decisions...how long would a 95 yr old man live anyways? Even leasing contracts are for 99yrs only i'm sure they thought by the time he's actually been made a citizen he'd be 6 feet under.

Another example of bright ideas is to have speeding at the signals Qr. 500 and breaking the red light Qr.6000 fine :P

Like a couple of people said before, the Indian govt hasnt imposed any bans on him. He is free on that count, but he has definitely angered quite a few people and hence suffered the same fate as Rushdie or Taslima. But I am not sure whether anybody has issued a fatwa on his head.

Coupla months back I had recieved a fwd from a friend of mine which kind of classified Hussain's paintings. It was kind of amusing to note that he had used nudity or degrading caricatures only while depicting gods/characters from one particular religion. It ended with a comment saying that he had once portrayed hitler in the nude coz his intention was to literally 'strip'(as in insult) Hitler. now, that was just a fwd and I did not have the time to do a research and confirm the facts. But it did contain some of the famous paintings by this guy and quite a lot of them were authentic.

Insult??!!....what are you talking about?!!

Any country has educated / uneducated people, however one has to think in terms of relative....This doesn't spelling out!...Does it?! or perhaps you think 1/6 of the population of the world which live in India are all educated!!...

Your statement "India might be the greatest democracy, but so far as people there are concerned, they are YEARS behind the western world. People need to be educated and that takes time.As was mentioned things like that happen quite alot in west, but they don't shut the newspaper, imprison the painter, journalist and furthermore the painter or......doesn't need to leave his/her country because he/she receives death threat..... Education, education, education..." is sufficiently explicit to show that you are pointing accusing fingers againt an entire nation, sir.and a disclaimer like (Hope this is no offense to our indian community here) won't really work in this case.

and i was not posting an argument.it was just a request to kindly refrain from any more insulting.

It wasn't the government of India that expelled him. He angered a lot of people with his works. Some of them are of the extremist type. He got scared of their response and fled the country. Nothing to do with the government really, just a few anti-social elements. And I believe those are everywhere, not just in one particular country.

Dot,

Don’t you worry about me my friend! You’ll never see me endorsing any violence against human beings.

Do worry about yourself, when you think about wishing death to someone. You know Allah may punish you and that is why I am advising you to never ever wish death to anyone, not even to our enemies.

God is the one who will reward and punish accordingly, isn't it?

Green cards is different to holding an American passport.

Once an Indian takes citizenship of another country he loses automatically his Indian citizenship. But the Indian govt provides two options one is the POI card that has been enacted recently and there is another one which is much older than POI card and gives you more rights..

By svelte_saggi• 9 years 3 months ago.

hmmm, yes I'm ok with that,

Just for information, all modern democratic countries (i guess you'll agree) hhave constitutiona and penal provisions against such "crazy or just deliberately offensive including obscene presentation. India to has.

as I said earlier, he had enough reason to be prosecuted under these penal codes but as i said earleir ther are many such creature there r thriving in the name of freedom of expression, which some like & some doesn't.

I reiterate, govt of India did nothing, rather protected his rights;

(he's not expelled, please correct all here)

It's his wish if he's living in Dubai, and as I know he's still in touch with india, selling paintings, being honored (yes some organization it sometime back), being interview & watched, friends visiting n so on.....!

Painther,

I would find if obscene and would not like it and would not look at it, maybe I would publicly express my views but I would not cause any harm to the author. He maybe crazy or just deliberately offensive, but I would have no right to stop his creations (no matter how much I couldn’t stand their sight).

Now this is what I think, in no way I am trying to enforce it on India.

India does what they judge right for the Nation and I respect.

I was just caught by surprise, I would expect more flexibility in what I see a modern and diverse democratic country, that’s all.

No offense, I respect all your point of views, I just don’t embrace them.

Hope you are OK withthis!

NIC, its not as simple as the picture you posted here. there are many such pictures you can find in india too , nude picture including their Gods & goddeses. It goes on in Stride! But

How will you react if, the son is shown having intercourse with his mother and they both are your beloved or related??

furious right???

By Nic• 9 years 3 months ago.
Nic

Take the example of this Playboy cover, showing an image representing Mary, the Mother of Jesus, published in Spain:

It is obviously a provocative and even offensive picture for many Catholics, and I am sure many condemned it. But does that mean the magazine was closed, or the author was expelt from Spain? No, because its art and art is interpreted differently from individual to individual, independently the creator’s intentions.

In a free, diverse and tolerant world, art is what it is and it should never be conditioned or used as a weapon!

Was I wrong in assuming that India was a diverse and tolerant society?

Art is art.

Even in China, a dictatorship, Mao tse Tsung is painted and portrayed in ridiculous and obscene postures.

Art cannot be condemned, it can be criticized but not censored. One may not like, one may feel offended by it, but that is art, unique creations by unique individuals.

Even if the artist had bad intentions, its still art. He could have been criticized by those who felt offended but removing him of his citizenship it’s quite a radical measure. This would never ever happen in the West, no matter how provocative the piece of art may be seen by some.

I was wrong about India; they are obviously not there yet!

I respect, it’s their entire right, I do not agree though!

By painther• 9 years 3 months ago.
painther

NIC,

Again a few incorrect informations you have.

One, MF is not expelled as you are claiming,

Two, India is diverse, I can give you hundreds of examples stating it.

Three, ur statement that "they are obviously not there yet" is irrelative here cose India's democracy or system or culture need not to copy to any1 else or intend to reach any destination.

East is east & west is west, if west claims teahing a few lessons, east can also teach ;em many lessons...!

I agree, primarily, with you that art is art and remain so ....U must agree that I know India more than you, sure and trust me there are MANY such creatures in india who express ROUTINLY against Indian ethos in terms of art. expressions/ demonstrations/ acts and so on..and they are happily enjying thier freedom of expression...trust me there are many!!!

NIC, I think you are unnecessary poking your nose here in Indian group discussion (as you do everywhere, as if you are champion of democracy and started "teaching" it to Indians),

First, India did not expel it as you said; he left because of anger from a section of society because that section thinks this painter (who use to print film posters earlier) offended them, Simple. he's living in Dubai peacefully and since Qatar is another champion of certain issues, conferred citizenship to him (it's only offered).

MF can anytime go back to India and live there. but as a minimum he can do is to say sorry for hurting centiments of section of society.

Art is art and should not become fart..lol
