Muhammad is now second only to Jack as the most popular name for baby boys in Britain and is likely to rise to No 1 by next year, a study by The Times has found. The name, if all 14 different spellings are included, was shared by 5,991 newborn boys last year, beating Thomas into third place, followed by Joshua and Oliver.

I must confess that I groan evertime someone says I'm Mohamed. In fact the last guy who introduced himself as Mohamed my reply was.

"Of Course"

According to the article Moslims represent 3% of the population in UK (that's about 1.3 million) and I think the journalist was maybe stirring things up a bit.

There has been some bad feeling that as a Christian country we are being made to change our ways to suit the rising population of Moslims there.

Nothing that has affected me, I hasten to add .. well not really.

Peace!

actually there is an increasing number of conversions to islam in most of the nonmuslim countries including UK. i presume that is one of the reason.

secondly post 9\11 muslims are becoming closer to their religion hence naming their children after the holy prophet (PBUH)

I understand that, lamea, but the article is about Britain, which is a Christian country not an Islamic one. That's why it was news (of sorts)

here i qatar someobes name for example is mohamed salman, we call him salman. if someones name is mohamed haydar, we call him haydar. simply because if we called everyone by his real name in my school (muhamad) there would be chaos and confusion. a study shows that 7out of every 10 boys in qatr is called muhamad. (PBUH)

in my country too every other person has muhammed as their first name. even if they are called tariq or suhail their actual name on the birth certificate is usually muhammed tariq or muhammed suhail! this is simply because it is the name of our beloved prophet(pbuh) and ppl name their boys this way as respect to the holy prophet(pbuh) and also in the hope that they will have his qualities.

it goes on to explain lots about the name, like ....

“In Arab countries, the name Muhammad is said when you don’t know the name of someone."

So you are doubtless correct in what you say lol

Take care :o)
