Virgin Music Store : Books and Things
Just thought I would let everyone know that Virgin Music Store is now open at the Villagio!
The book selection is wonderful, much better than Jarir (parking and getting to the store is much much easier at Virgin). The staff was very friendly, one of the authors I was looking for they didn't have but the sales lady made a note to order it for us. The Virgin store has a huge selection of Apple products, not just iPods but Laptops, iMac's and 23' inch dislplays (I didn't see the 30 inch ones though).
The prices were better than I thought, DVDs at the music store in the Hyatt for new releases are 140QR, I saw some for 80QR at Virgin. The store is huge! Some people had drinks in the store, hopefully it stays that way as I love to shop with a cup of Starbucks in hand!
It is a good place to lose yourself in the book section for 2 hours like I did!
The Villagio is adjacent to the Khalifa Stadium / Hyatt Plaza
Yay, finally Apple laptops open to try to public.

Finally! at least we will have good music in Qatar! but hope it is not censored.
Just wanted to let you all know that after a great deal of research I discovered that Virgin sells an external Hard Drive at the wrong price.
120GB External Portable HDD (Western Digital)
Price: 799QR something
In Carrefour it's 460QR something
I did ensure that it was EXACTLY the same, and literally 100m away from each other.
So, if you are looking for extra GB's don't get them at Virgin. I did let them know the mistake, but they have not rectified it. So.....guess i'll be more careful next time.
Just went there yesterday with my family. My daughter enjoyed going throgh children's books and my wife had such fun choosing her favorite TV series on DVD. I myself was pretty impressed with their selection (never seen before in Qatar!), but what impressed me most is the absence of discrimination on their sales people. Yes I met some Asian employees there having their usual smile on but it really surprised me when a Sudanese employee named Charles (hope I got your nationality right, mate) and spent almost half an hour explaining their Mac gadgets to me. Being here in Qatar for almost 3 years now, and being discriminated most of the time for being Asian, its the first time that I have been approached (and not the other way around) by a sales person asking me how he could help me and really going out of his way to explain and show their products.
Keep it up guys!
My wife was also approached with the same kind of hospitality by an Arab employee. Really shows that this shop is one of a kind.
but the price difference is overwhelming. It shouldn't be so.
Here I have learnt that one should always 'check' the competitors.
The prices shown at a retail outlet of a giant like Virgin, should at least reflect what its other stores around the globe offer.
Here there is no consumer protection. It seems that on occasion, retailers 'look' at a product and just put a price that someone might be willing to pay. It's very unprofessional.
That being said, their book prices are still better than Jarir, so at least there is hope.
I'm just getting sick of the greediness that is so blatently displayed in some stores here.

Wow! What a breath of fresh air! The store is fantastic, has a great range and was packed with people.

It is a great store... Qatari - yes a breath of fresh air.
I felt giddy - a real book store in Qatar.
Not too expensive and the service excellent.
I am so relieved I will never have to go to Jarir again. May the other bookstore managers go there and see what a real bookshop looks like and how for years they had a captive market that the didn't cater to.
Anyhow, this books section looks more like a bookstore, than a toy store which claims to be a major bookshop. Not that I care for reading in English, of course.
Absolutely wonderful! The staff actually knew what they were talking about, book selection was good, (great compared to Jarir) and the staff was very helpful and friendly. Definately a wonderful way to spend a few hours browsing and dreaming (...of the MacBook, iMac etc) and finding much to your surprise that you spent half as much as what you would have at Jarir.
Good on you guys at Virgin! Keep up the good work!
Tried to find any DVDs that might contain some saucy scenes.
NOT ONE BLOODY DVD, and a note if you think woo hoo just found an 18 certificate film, check the label. If its a little +18 symbol look on the back, chances are the DVD has come from a U.A.E. Distribution company and anything naughty will have been cut out.
Top Tip that !!!.
Edited DVDs in Virgin, and no illustrated bibles why ? I did see a tiny bit of cleavage on a paper back cover so thats progress !!.
Overall though its good to have a decent shop in town.
What, NUDE PHOTOS, you serious It will be fire bombed tomorrow !! see how long that lasts.
Lets have a sweep stake, I say one week, letter in Gulf Times, book removed.
Wanna raise me !!
Yeah I went in there the other day. I was very impressed. There was so much to look at I came out not having actually focused on anything properly. I need to go back a few times before I get over the intial excitement.
ITProf2006 was dead on. Spend well over an hour in the store last night and it was wonderful! Book prices were cheaper then Jarir for sure! DVD's are a little cheaper then anywhere else in the city that I've seen, and the selection was great! Check it out, for sure worth your time!
I was wondering just today when it would open! Great to hear it finally has. Definately going to make a trip down!
I was there last weekend, oh my god, it was too good to be true!
Great great book selection.
Now I can officially boycott Jarir.
Where can I find villagio? A landmark would be great. Can't wait to check it out this weekend...
If they didn't censor the nude photographies, I don't think they will censor Piglet!
The fact that the price difference is a whopping 339QR does not mean that it's a "mistake".
Do 'Virgin Megastores' offer a "Best Price Guarantee"? If not, then this merely a difference in their "Pricing".
I'm not the least bit surprised that they did not rectify the price if they do not offer a 'Best Price Guarantee'.
& 'Being more careful' is something that you should keep in mind all the time when buying any product pretty much. I prefer to call it: Doing your homework before buying something! (Checking competitors and their reflective prices).

WOW, so much hype for virgin store make us see how much qatar is still far behind Dubai, but at least its nice to be able to go to virgin which is my favorite hanging out place in a shopping mall. way to go qatar, what's next in line?
I always tell the truth, even when I lie
Its been a long time coming!
A dream came true......
I didn't go to the kid's section, so I can't say if Piglet was censored or not.
What time is it open this Friday? Does anyone know? Thanx! :)
Great, thanks bibs!
Does anyone have a phone number for the Virgin Megastore? Thanx
