What's going on in QL?

TweetyBird
By TweetyBird

It seems some of the most active and vocal participants of QL have significantly reduced their involvement or disappeared all together and I am curious as to why. Is it the natural ebb and flow of an online forum where the older members move on and new members take over or is it something else?

If you were once a frequent poster in QL but no longer paricipate as much in the forum discussions - what is the reason for the change?

(This is not about QLSG and minimizing the amount of information about the gatherings - that I understand. This is just about participating in the everyday QL threads.)

i just got a bit tired, and need to be re-charged... it's like any extensive exercise... you get feed up of doing the same, so you need some break, and then you come back full of energy and new ideas…

The second reason could be a summer time… more outings (less time for QL)... some ppl go for vacation and so on..

..some of QL legends find QL is not as same as it used to be anymore, and prefer to leave or to stay in shade…..and of course as you said, new members are coming ... new blood... they take over…normal process…

so I have lots to do. I usually log in to QL and if I see anything I can add a comment to I do, but it's a bit different when I'm not there amongst you all, somehow.

I mean I can't discuss things happening on the roads, streets, in the malls, supermarkets etc if I'm not physically there to SEE what's happening :D

The above situation obviously limits my ability to contribute as much as I would normally when sitting by my puter in Doha having just been cut up on the road by a car with a sticker on the back which announces that the driver 'SUPPORTS THE CAMPAIGN FOR ROAD SAFETY IN DOHA'

At this time of the year, many users are already on or busy preparing for their vacation to escape the heat and humidity. Thus they have less time to login or participate in discussions. Most just have time to read threads and no time to sit and type.

First of all the people part of QLSG hijack threads, have threads created about social gatherings, discuss what happened, they were so happy to meet so and so etc.

Naturally new members see this and want to join in. They get told they can’t because of some rules and you wonder why they get annoyed.

If you’re going to talk about social gatherings in an open forum expect people wanting to join the events.

It’s ok for you to hijack threads to say hello to people but when newbie’s say anything not related to the thread, god forbid you all jump down their throats.

I have seen the same thing happening to other networks during my previous life! :-p (i mean , life before Doha)

For a while, ppl start intersting topics, there are lotsa debates, a group of ppl come together, your whole life starts revolving around the network.

tne first thing that comes to ur mind wen u see something new(an event, an idea, a topic) is abt posting it in the network.

and after a while something seems to die out!!

Believe me it happens even without thinskinned people, mutual admiration/mushy threads and thread hijacking. Yeah they r a put off but what I mean is these are superficial reasons.(Like in history wen u study about wars/revolutions there are Immediate reasons but they are never really the core reasons)

I feel some kind of a saturation point comes in with ppl n wen the most active ppl kinda step back they create a void.

Second thing I've seen is the transient nature of life in the Gulf.People r always moving, changing jobs. There is less constancy than wen ppl r staying back home. n somehow, the excitement u shared with the ppl hu wer ther wen u joned doesnt come easily with the newbies(like me ;) ) for whatever reason.

Also aftr a point ppl do run out of intrsting topics, i guess!!

The only consistent feature in all of your dissatisfying relationships is you.!

You are here Da but rarely posting. When I first joined QL over a year ago - you were one of the ones that always made for a good laugh as well as some intense dialogue along with Gypsy and a quite a few notable others.

It's a shame that a lot of these people have limited their presence on QL. The result is a more boring QL. :(

...was a place which had tleorance written all over it.

...was a place where i could let my creativity run riot.

...was a place which genuinely wanted to help people settle down in Qatar all that more faster.

But now, it is anything but that.

It has been widely polarised into left and right camps, people who feels that they are being wronged and others who feel that the wronged people are the wrong ones. Petty issues are blown way out of proportion and genuine topics have no takers. While a "good morning QL thread" get 300 replies, a genuine question about "health facilities in Qatar" receives but a whimper. Novi and a few others being the exception.

Waking up in the morning, I wouldnt like to read about petty issues with my morning cuppa coffee. While i do understand that the bigger a website becomes, the larger be the types of people and friction in it, i still cannot stand what the site has become.

It started with those religious threads, and then came the racism threads, and then the 'firing threat' thread and then the 'Qataris are BAAAAD' thread and so on. The hate never stopped, there was no looking back.

How many fell by the way side? How many people i would have loved to meet some day...e46M3, thetruth, smellyindiancoolie...

But for me, all hope is not lost yet. Every dusk should have a dawn. Like a dear friend once said, happenings in QL is cyclical. There is a low tide for every high tide. I am just hoping and praying that it does change.

Else, i would be pained with the feeling that my 1 year and 11 weeks in this wonderful forum would have been a waste. The feeling would always be there that this was what it was building up to all these years?

These are some of the reasons why i dont let the green man talk all that much lately. I miss QL, but i guess i will have to move on too...

I agree 100%. The fun and controversial topics have all but disappeared.

Here are my top 3 reasons why I think things have changed:

1. Some people are too thin skinned and take intelligent comments within a debate personally when the intent is not personal at all. It is just debate and looking at two sides of the story.

2. Some people look for trouble. They either join in on controversial topics and poisen them or start their own hate threads. Naming QL members in hate threads is, in my opinion, a big reason for the decline of participation. Along with that is the deliberate trashing of nationalities and religions. Debate is one thing - being out right nasty and belligerent is something completely different

3. hi-jacking threads. There is nothing more annoying than following an interesting thread and finding half of the 100 comments are not related to the topic at all. If I come back to a good topic to find it is over run by people discussing the weather - I stop reading and posting and forget about it. It's a shame.

personally I feel yuck and about to throw out. Had I been a female, I would think I have missed my period. Fullstop. This place is becoming heavily infected.

When someone posts a thread about politics/religion, then it turns out a big fight, threats and racism erupts

When someone asks a general question, they rarely get a proper feedback.

When someone posts about personal issues/love/romance, people start making fun and some try to date.

Let aside the moderator who changes the word "seks" but leaves the word "seksual". As if we are under-aged or in a nursery school.

Most threads are filled with 100s of ridiculous comments which will take ages to read and eventually one would skip most of the comments and would for sure miss the genuine comments as well as the genuine threads.

Season is not the reason. Last year I started in May and the forum was very active and continued to be very active.

Let aside the fact that some QLers think they own QL and want to direct it the way they like. Others will not agree to disagree with them. Some make fun of the language and hunt for mistakes.

Point#1. Lately I became thin-skinned so to speak because some posters (after meeting me once or twice outside the forum)thinks they know me and deduce the topics I create/write here IS my "personal" life. I tried to brush it off as nothing but lately...IT IS rubbing me the wrong way, so to speak.

POINT #2. what else is new...if you call their attention, you would appear snobbish...grrr

POINT#3. hi-jacking threads. THAT'S a sure way to kill a good thread.

And I also think that, when the ones who attend the gatherings are involved in any debates some, who don't go to the meetings, tend to accuse those who do of backing each other up - irrespective of the fact that they may just happen to hold similar opinions, whether they had met or not!

I would, personally, find it offensive if I was accused of being in a 'clique' and therefore had no opinion of my own and that I follow like some sheep! (not that I can recall anyone ever saying that of me, but have seen it said of others).

Personally speaking...I got fed up with the BS on here from all the people who had nothing good or pleasant to say but kept running others down, whether it was religion, nationality, or political. Just needed to take a step back for a bit. Plus my life got a bit more complicated with the addition of a few more family members.

I do so get tired of rehashing over and over again the same stupid arguements when I post a serious thread and certain people come in and totally ransack it because of their hatred towards others. The thread of asking for help for QAWS turned into a "I hate the American military" in one afternoon, and even after I asked the site administrator to delete the negative threads, the same person comes on and starts it up the next day...It gets very old and tiresome. There's even a thread on here today that says that killing the members of the US army is highly recommended, but in a humane way...whaatttt???? The response to that is that if someone in your family is killed, then kill two of theirs...double whaaat??? HOW can anyone think this kind of discussion is good??? THAT is what bothers me...the mindset of some of the people on here. I mean they are mentally scary...BUT, i do have to admit, I like the fact that this site is monitored by "others".

The people I have met on line and in person, haven't ever disappointed me, so I keep meeting up with them in social situations and even on here.

Azi...I miss you too, hon...

I think that things changed a bit when the QL gatherings started. Suddenly the people online have a face, you do feel differently after meeting people for the first time the next time go log on. A couple of years ago there were far more debates and discussions going on, it started to slow down after the social group really took off, I think.

It goes back to what Darude said earlier. It is easy to say anything from the safety of your lazy boy while in a virtual conversation. And these people who say that they would have no problem acting the same in person are full of BS. When you are in the work place, your home, out with friends etc. - topics come up that can push your buttons but most people do not respond with personal attacks against the individual making the point you disagree with. Most people follow an unwritten rule about decorum in person to person interactions because we are cognizant of the fact that we will be held accountable for our actions. Online there is no accountability.

its really hard to control people here. subscribing to this site is very easy. no matter how you ban these people they keep coming back with new usernames. some of us can ignore personal attacks/hate posts, but some cant. i dont think deleting threads is the solution, what if its a good post and some people just mess it?

at this point the admins are deleting some unwanted comments that may cause anger or trouble. for now they will be spending more time tracking the site.

for repeated posts...not all are reading the guidelines they post as they like. same with uninteresting posts...its hard to control subscribers.

This is the first time I have had chance to check this thread and it is good to see so many people come out and comment in a rational and intellectual manner. Looking over this thread it seems that people are pulling back from QL because of:

1. Hate threads and comments/posters turn a non-hate thread into a hate mongering session. The hate revolves around a specific countries politics, religion, cultural differences.

2. High- jacking seems to generate a lot of comments but my impression is that this promotoes posters from futher commenting in a thread but is not entirely responsible for posters leaving QL all together.

So the next question is what to do about it?

I have to emphasize that: it is "hate" to use some innocent/charity thread to glorify a criminal/terrorist, but it is a DUTY to post to stop this act and to expose this criminal/terrorist.

This is what happened in a thread about QAWS. This is why it was deleted, because their narrow minds could not accept anybody who would oppose them.

Freedom of speech is a common mantra here that is often used as a defense when someone is taken to task for launching a personal attack against someone else. I disagree with that. I believe whole heartedly with freedom of speech but with that comes responsibility to treat others how we ourselves want to be treated. Just because you have the right to say something, doesn't mean you should. What is that saying - discretion is the better part of valor.

Kismet -

It can be cliquey here but I can say with certainty that those who are in the clique may debate you for your strong opinions but they would never personally attack you because of your stand. You would probably even find a few that agree with you. :D The debate is what made it fun and interesting. But that has changed lately.

I can't speak for the trolls that seem to show up on occasion.

Thing that gets me, if someone dare to post anything that should, heaven forbid, in the classifieds you get all the anally retentive making smart alec comments about 'this should be in the classifieds' Tut bloody tut........do you really care if this is in the wrong place?....I mean, do you really???

Personally, I've been super duper busy. Also the recent topics being posted aren't my cup of tea so I'm not really having an inclination to post anything.

I think Voltaire sid "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." .. I agree with him, but some people just spout without having anything to say!

Are you saying that the it was good that the Qaws thread was deleted or it was bad? Should we delete these threads or just ignore the person spreading the hate? In my opinion, most of these people spreading hate are like school yard bullies. They want and need an audience. If they are ignored, they will get bored and go somewhere else. But the more people respond to their posts, the more they feed the hate and the more satisfaction the hate monger will get out of it.

I'm asking!!! lol You are fast being replaced by AbuAmerican who is always inviting people to "step out side" or step into his gym for a good bashing. lol j/k - no one can replace you!!! :D

Kismet - I would start those threads but they would digress very quickly into hateful comments followed by hijackers carrying on a personal conversation amongst themselves that has nothing to do with the topic. So I guess I answered my own question - two reasons why I often times do not join in a thread.
