By : Fazmina Samat
Qatar’s national emblem, also known as the national coat of arms is the highest visual representation of the nation’s identity. More than just a symbol, the emblem reflects Qatar’s unique cultural heritage while also looking forward to a united and ambitious future. It stands as a mark of pride for Qataris and serves to distinguish the State of Qatar on the global stage.
A refreshed emblem for a modern nation
In 2022, the State of Qatar introduced an updated version of its national emblem. This redesign was intended to create a more reliable and modern national identity, one that reflects unity, inspires trust and aligns with the country's vision for future generations.
The emblem is thoughtfully composed of four historical elements that each hold a deep significance in Qatar’s heritage.
Key elements and its meanings are;
- The Jalbout (Fath al-khair)
A most important feature in the emblem is the traditional dhow known as Fath al-Khair, meaning ‘Bringer of Goodness.’ Built in 1900, it was the first wooden motor-powered ship in Qatar and played a crucial role in pearl diving and trading. Positioned on the top left of the emblem, the Jalbout’s sail features stripes inspired by the Qatari flag, symbolizing pride, honour, and national belonging.
- The Sea
The sea holds a special place in Qatar’s cultural memory. For generations, it was central to life in the region, supporting livelihoods through finishing and pearl diving. In the emblem, the waves are drawn with zig-zag edges inspired by Qatar’s flag. The three lines of waves symbolize Qatar being surrounded by water on three sides, while a baseline ties all the elements together – signifying strength and unity.
- The palm
Two palm trees grace the top side of the emblem, symbolizing abundance, generosity, and Qatar’s deep connection to nature. The design draws inspiration from a tree on the farm of HH the late Father Amir Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani in the Al Ashra area. Their presence in the emblem reflects the leadership’s respect for heritage and agricultural richness.
- The Sword
The Sword is a longstanding emblem of courage, honor, and strength in Qatari culture. Traditionally passed down through generations, it was used to defend land and values. In the new emblem, two swords form the base, modelled closely after the original sword of Qatar’s founder. The sword is a recurring theme in Qatari songs and poetry, symbolizing bravery and wisdom.
Regulations when using the emblem
Due to its national significance, the use of Qatar’s emblem is strictly regulated. It may only be used for specific official purposes as outlined in the government’s guidelines. Unauthorized reproduction or use is prohibited.
