In fact somewhere I have a cartoon depicting the world's view of us in the UK when we first got the 2012 Games and it was far more offensive, and even MORE true than the cartoon doctor posted.

If I can find it I'll put it up here. Actually I think it was a slide show likening previous Cities which had held the games to how London be as a host. London was all graffiti and slums lol

You see that red double-decker at the closing of the Games in Beijing? I heard a guy on BBC say it may be more fitting at the opening of the games in 2012, for the lid of the bus and the doors to fly off in an explosion and then the athletes run out of it. Now that WAS 'sick' ! lol

That's right Tig. If you're Qatari you need that on QL.

I like these cartoons. They confirm what I have always thought - Qataris have a good sense of humor and have the ability to laugh at themselves as well as at others. I see nothing offensive about them at all.

Post some more please with the translations.

Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about

nobody should be offended by any of the cartoon even if it sends chill to some. Let us remember that the recent situation here in local news is about that Qatari student and the cartoon is just part of current events.

It's the same things as security bulletins issued by certain countries to a certain country regarding warning to their citizens regarding security threats on a specific country. Its sounds offending to many but we just have to ignore it as part of their work.

J/k, no need to get offended. The humor is crap, but the concept is good. But then these cartoons are not made for humor anyways...

Cartoon no 1 really reminds me when i had arrived in Doha and used to see its map quite a lot but being inside the air conditioned room. I did not have the residence ID so could not have my own car and have a license before hand.

One day i intended to go to have a look at the sea site as i thought that the seas may be as attractive as a Red sea in jeddah. I took a bus but got the wrong one from LULU hyper market, it dropped me at some unknown place. I had to walk a lot in great heat to reach some other place to find another bus, it was really unforgettable memory.

I managed to reurn in the evening to my apartment wihout suffering heat stroke :-).

I just would like to state that there's a slight difference between cartoons, the danish cartoons made thousands of people going to the street protesting and threatning to kill the authors, how many british did the same due to these caricatures?

So, i think british are more tolerant, wanna bet that if i put here a caricature with Jesus no one will threaten me to death? or that there wont be folks concentrating to protest against them?

What this world needs most is sense of humour :)

Plse do note, i ain't attacking Islam or any other religion, it would be fun if people would post more drawnings as these ones without fear.

Fair enough, I don't want to drag QL down any further than it already has been over the past couple of days, so I wont push it any further. All I say is I don't see why religion is off bounds while other topics are ok even though they have an equal ability to offend.

Thanks again for sharing the cartoons Doctora, it's nice to gain an insight into an aspect of Qatar life I don't get to experience.

By britexpat• 13 years 11 months ago.

I must agree with Doctora.. We don't want to go that route, but can discuss the use of cartoons for satire and lampooning in general..

OK i will be deliberately ignoring any comments about the Prophet's cartoons..although i'd prefer if we'd call them the danish cartoons....

if you want to talk about the above cartoons be my guest but don't compare it with the danish cartoons

By tallg• 13 years 11 months ago.

Weren't they danish cartoons? Anyway.

I don't understand why they can't be compared, but you're obviously not prepared to talk about.

By tallg• 13 years 11 months ago.

Mr Paul has a point. Why is religion off limits to stereotyping cartoons? Some people may be offended by the cartoon of the prophet, but equally some people may be just as offended by the london cartoon above.

By anonymous• 13 years 11 months ago.
anonymous

stereotyping different cultures and nationalities, which is wrong.

Like i said, SOME people may find this profiling of Londoners and Britain offensive, just as the Muslim population found that idiot dutchmans cartoons offensive.

You see my point ?

And just for the record, although i believe in freedom of speech, i do think that dutch man overstepped the mark.

what has this cartoon have to do with religion??????? what mulism/anti muslim feelings???????

I (and many Qataris) did not find the UK cartoon any offensive, on the contrary, we found it hilarious and funny.

It shows the THUGS in UK that people will encounter. is that a generalization?? no, it's a CARTOON, the man is not entitled to show each stereotype (good or bad) in a cartoon....maybe you found it offensive because it is from a QATARI

MR PAUL and RENEE don't even hint to (Prophet Mohammed) cartoon and compare it with the UK cartoon , don't go into this area or it this thread will be an ugly thread!!

Some of the user comments on qatarsucks are pretty offensive though!!!

I didn't see the comment, but unless there are facts given to back up the claims about the Islamic museum then yes, that is offensive. Again, without seeing the comment it's hard to judge, but it sounds quite specific rather than generalising or stereotyping.

By genesis• 13 years 11 months ago.
genesis

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I don't find for instance Qatarsucks.com offending, since the guy always cover stories that are in the media already. But here, when someone like "rami-leb" call the Islamic museum a failure, & corrupted , although it's not yet opened. Thats not generalization, or is it?

Agree with you there.. Having worked in various countries in the Middle East and else where, I can say that my personal experience is that Qataris are very easy going and accomodating.

Expats always whine. Especially those who haven't been to many other countries. There are morons in all societies, so we have to learn to live with them

By tallg• 13 years 11 months ago.
tallg

Well, I guess this is a good example of how different people interpret things differently and some get offended and some don't. So perhaps we can now better understand why some Qataris get upset at the generalisations and stereotypes being talked about on QL, while others are able to shrug it off and laugh at themselves.

By genesis• 13 years 11 months ago.

Sorry , I must disagree..This is sensationalizing. If the cartoon was about binge drinking or the stupid Gordon Brown etc , I would be happy with it..

This is taking a sad incident that occurred and making London out to be full of violent people..

Yesterday, a girl was killed in a drive by shooting in Chicago.. Woulkd a cartoon showing Chicago with drivers shooting left right and centre be appropriate. I think not!

I don't find the London cartoon offensive. It's just using a well known British stereotype, something that cartoons do all the time about subjects and countries all round the world. Indeed, most of the ones in the link ngourlay posted do exactly the same.

As with all stereotypes though, both positive and negative, we know that they don't apply to the entire population.

btw, good to see you're still around ngourlay.

By britexpat• 13 years 11 months ago.
britexpat

I don't think the analogy works..

However, I do find the cartoon offensive and inappropriate because it depicts a picture of the UK which is untrue. I am saddened by the loss of the young life, but it dioes not mean that London is a city rife with violance and murder..

Here the Cartoonist is playing on the grief and anger of a nation and trying to get brownie points from them.
