Eid al Adha 2022 in Qatar is anticipated to be a joyous and celebratory affair this year. Eid this year is coinciding with the summer break and school vacations, hence most families are gearing up to make the most of the festival with much excitement and fervor. Here’s all you need to know about Eid al Adha in Qatar for the year 2022.
When is Eid al Adha 2022 being celebrated?
The astronomical predictions for this year state that the day of Arafat will fall on Friday, July 8, 2022. According to the Ministry of Endowments’ (Awqaf) Crescent Sighting Committee, the Hijri month of Dhu al-Hijjah for 1443 AH began on June 30, 2022.
Eid al Adha in Qatar is set to be celebrated on July 9, as per these calculations.
What is Eid al Adha?
Eid al Adha is the second most important festival after Eid al-Fitr celebrated by Muslims around the world. The occasion of Eid al Adha, also known as Eid Al Qurban (Sacrifice), is meant to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s (A.S) readiness to sacrifice his son, Ismail (A.S), as a sign of his devotion to Allah. During the point of sacrifice, Allah replaced Ismail with a ram which was eventually slaughtered in the place of Prophet Ibrahim’s (A.S) son.
Ever since then, Muslims have celebrated Eid al Adha as a festival of sacrifice, where animals are sacrificed by those who can afford it.
Eid al Adha is a public holiday in Qatar and the occasion is celebrated for three days as a holiday for all including schools, private offices, and companies. These dates would be July 10-13.
The Amiri Diwan has announced the Eid holiday for government entities to begin on July 10, 2022, and end on July 14, 2022. This means that all Ministries, govt. agencies, public bodies, and institutions will return to work on Sunday, July 17, 2022.
Holidays for banks and other financial institutions will be determined by the Qatar Financial Markets Authority and the Governor of Qatar Central Bank.
The Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs has announced a list of 588 mosques and prayer grounds that will host the Eid al Adha prayers on July 9, 2022. The prayers will be performed at 15-20 minutes approx. post sunrise, around 5.05 am, on July 9, according to the announcement by Awqaf.
Thousands of worshippers in Qatar are expected to congregate at the Imam Abdul Wahab Grand Mosque and many other mosques mentioned in the list, for Eid al Adha prayers.
Where to get animals sacrificed in Qatar for Eid al Adha?
Muslims celebrate the festival by offering animal sacrifice (either goat, sheep, or portion of cow or camel) that is divided into three portions and distributed to family, friends, the needy, and oneself. The animal sacrifices can be done any day from day one to day four of Eid al Adha.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) along with the Ministry of Municipality has teamed up with Widam Food Company to regulate the purchase of animals for sacrifices. The entities have announced that sheep will be offered to the community at subsidized prices.

The animal sacrifices can be performed at eight slaughterhouses situated in various areas: Al Wakra, Abu Hamour, Al Shihaniya, Al Rayyan, Muaither, Al Shamal, and Al Mazroa Slaughterhouses. The option to book your sheep online and have it delivered to your doorstep is also available on Widam’s app.
Things to do for Eid al Adha 2022
Eid al Adha is a joyous affair and a time for the community to socialize and spend time with families and friends. The day begins with the prayers and is then followed by people getting together with loved ones for breakfast. Those offering sacrifices head to the slaughterhouses to get their preferred animal slaughtered.
Plan a BBQ
With all the meat at hand, the most obvious activity for families is to engage in a perfect summer barbecue post-festivities.
People can head over to the numerous family and public beaches for the ideal BBQ evening with their friends and family. The ones wishing to do it within the city can also head to the parks that offer BBQ facilities such as Al Bidda and Rawdat Al Khail parks.
Families also can rejoice with their loved ones for lunch and dinner at several of the city's restaurants. There are many good restaurants with great rooftop views, restaurants with live music, and quaint cafes that are worth checking out.
Enjoy movies at a cinema
The Eid weekend is also a time that coincides with several fun movie releases, so it is definitely a good time to unwind for a movie night at Novo Cinemas, VOX Cinemas and others.
