The Katara Ramadan Festival kicks off at the cultural village

By QLNews

The Katara Ramadan Festival commenced yesterday as the holy month began. The Cultural Village Foundation – Katara is hosting as many as 200 events for the festival, which will include 168 lectures during this month, along with exhibitions and sports activities.

The theme of the festival this year is ‘hospitality in various Muslim nations’, and focuses on 12 Arab and Islamic countries, showcasing their different customs and traditions that are special to this month. The seminars and lectures are being held in cooperation with RAF foundation, Qatar Charity, and the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs.

An iftar cannon has been installed at the southern part of Katara, and is to be fired every evening at Maghrib prayer to announce the end of the day’s fast. Cultural and fine arts tents have been set up in this area as well.

One of the priorities for the festival is physical fitness, and football and volleyball matches will be held on the beach after sundown to this end. Games under the categories of fun games and brain-teasers will be included, as well as a FIFA 2017 PlayStation championship for males aged 10 and above. (Although a slot for females next time may be a good idea. Girls like video games too!)

Quran memorisation contests are another feature of the festival, along with a daily treasure hunt around Katara’s premises and Meerat Ramadan.

The festival will continue till 24th June—the end of Ramadan—and will begin at 10:00 am each day.
