Olympic champion Barshim scores gold; Qatari athletes excel at West Asia Championship

Mutaz Barshim, Qatar’s renowned athletics champion scored the gold medal at the West Asia Athletics Championship’s opening ceremony on Wednesday.

The 2.20m high jump by the champion scored the gold quite easily, followed by Oman’s Fatiq Abdul Ghafoor and Iraq’s Hussain Falah who bagged silver and bronze respectively.

On the women’s front as well, Qatar excelled with Bashayer Obaid bagged gold for women’s triple jump at a leap of 11.62m.

Femi Ogunode clinched the winning position in the men’s 100m sprint with a record 10.13 seconds. The second position was bagged by Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Abubakar (10.23 seconds) and Qatar’s Tosun Ogunde scored bronze with 10.31 seconds sprint.

Another Al Annabi athlete, Omar Daudi scored the bronze medal in 110m hurdles race with a time of 14.27.

The men’s 3000m steeplechase was also ruled by Qatar with Yasen Salem (8.33.63) and Musab Adam (8.34.25) bagging first and second spots.

The victory for Qatari athletes continued as Mabrook Saleh scored the silver medal in 10,000m race walk with a time of 49:09.64 seconds

Mutaz Essa Barshim will also be starting his Diamond League season at Suhein bin Hamad stadium from May 5.

Held at Suheim bin Hamad stadium, the West Asia Championship witnessed participation from more than 12 countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, the UAE, Lebanon, Oman, Jordan, Yemen, Syria, Bahrain, and Palestine. Qatari athletes shone at the events with their exemplary performance.
