WATCH: QNB Stars League Week 14 highlights

A total of 15 goals were scored over the weekend during the Week 14 fixtures of the 2019-20 QNB Stars League with three out of the six matches played ending in a draw.

The most prominent highlight of the matches was leaders Al Duhail’s shocking 0-1 defeat at the hands of Al Rayyan. It was the Red Knights’ first loss in this season’s league championship. Yet, they stayed on top with 33 points even as Al Rayyan bridged the gap with them after moving on to 31 points.

 

 

New recruit Johan Boli scored the all-important goal of the match.

Al Sadd stayed third in the table with 30 points after beating Al Sailiya 3-0, with star Qatari forward Akram Afif netting a hat-trick.

The Wolves thus cut their margin with strong title contenders Al Duhail from six points to three, while Al Sailiya slipped from sixth to seventh place with 17 points.

Match: Al Ahli 2 vs Al Khor 2

Al Khor snatched their second equalizer right at the death to hold Al Ahli to a 2-2 draw in Week 14 of the 2019-20 QNB Stars League at the Al Ahli Stadium on Thursday. New recruit Lucca Borges was Al Khor’s star as he scored a double (23rd minute and 90+5).

Abdelrahman Moustafa (11th minute) and substitute Nabil El Zhar (49th minute) were Al Ahli’s scorers. Al Ahli now has 17 points and Al Khor 10.

Al Ahli had beaten Al Khor 3-2 in the first leg of the -20 QNB Stars League. Moreover, it was a consolation and a valuable point for Al Khor, who is struggling to stay afloat. The Knights had suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Umm Salal in the previous round.

Al Arabi and Umm Salal played out an exciting 1-1 draw in Week 14 of the 2019-20 QNB Stars League at the Al Arabi Stadium on Thursday. Pierre-Michelle Lasogga gave Al Arabi the lead in the 64th minute, but that was neutralized by Raul Oscar for Umm Salal in the 86th minute.

Al Arabi and Umm Salal now have 19 and nine points respectively. Al Arabi, coming from back-to-back defeats (1-6 against Al Sadd in their deferred match from Week 5 and 1-3 against Al Duhail last week), thus suffered their sixth defeat in this season’s league competition.

Meanwhile, the hard-earned point was a huge sigh of relief for Umm Salal, who are struggling in the danger zone along with Al Shahania and Al Khor.

Al Wakrah overcame a resilient Al Shahania with a 4-1 victory in Week 14 of the 2019-20 QNB Stars League at the Al Wakrah Stadium on Friday.

Al Wakrah’s goals were scored by Mohamed Benyettou in the 21st and 90+1 minutes, Iliass Hassani (63rd) and Khalid Muneer (88th). Al Shahania had earlier equalized in the 51st minute through Ramin Rezaein.

Al Shanania found themselves on the wrong end of an entertaining must-win game against their rivals in which they let slip an opportunity to enhance their perilous league position.

Match: Al Gharafa 0 vs Qatar SC 0

Ten-man Al Gharafa held on for a 0-0 draw with Qatar SC in Week 14 of the 2019-20 QNB Stars League at the Al Gharafa Stadium on Friday.

A match with consequences at both ends of the QNB Stars League table failed to produce a result in a hearty battle, which saw the pendulum swing in favor of Qatar SC as early as the third minute when Al Gharafa’s Mostafa Kadira was sent off.

This was just the advantage that Qatar SC would have hoped for as they pursued an opening goal. While Al Gharafa was able to create some openings, the clearest chances of the first half fell to the away side who struck the post twice. Abdenasser El Khayati, advancing down the right-hand side, crossed the ball into the area with Kayke Rodrigues heading against the far post and Qasem Burhan clawed the ball to safety as it rolled across the goal-line.

Match: Al Sadd 3 vs Al Sailiya 0

Akram Afif led the charge with a hat-trick as reigning champions Al Sadd put it across Al Sailiya 3-0 in Week 14 of the 2019-20 QNB Stars League at the Al Sadd Stadium on Saturday. Akram scored in the third, 48th (penalty) and 54th minutes.

Al Sadd moved on to 30 points with their 10th victory, while Al Sailiya stood on 17 points after crashing to their sixth defeat. The Wolves, who had lifted the season-opening Sheikh Jassim Cup (Super Cup), recently added the 2020 Qatar Cup to their trophy cabinet by defeating Al Duhail 4-0 in the final. And they are now on course towards retaining the title.

Venue: Al Sadd Stadium

Al Rayyan shocked leaders Al Duhail 1-0 in Week 14 of the 2019-20 QNB Stars League at the Al Sadd Stadium on Saturday. Al Rayyan’s new recruit Yohan Boli netted the all-important goal in the 64th minute.

Al Duhail thus suffered their first defeat in this season’s league competition. Nevertheless, they remained on top of the standings with 33 points, whereas Al Rayyan moved on to 31 points, one more than third-placed Al Sadd. The first half of the high-voltage clash between the teams in the top bracket was even in terms of possession and the chances created.

Al Duhail, playing their first match under new Moroccan coach Walid Regragui who replaced Portuguese Rui Faria, resorted to long passes initially, perhaps aimed mainly at the good reach of tall striker Mario Mandzukic.
