Qatar wins 3 gold, one silver on opening day at GCC Games
Kuwait has geared up to host the 3rd Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Games, which will take place from May 13 to May 31, 2022. Kuwait is hosting the Games for the first time, a regional multi-sport event including athletes from the Gulf Cooperation Council region. The GCC Games are a quadrennial multi-sport tournament organized by the GCC Union.
The GCC Games will feature around 1,700 competitors from six GCC countries competing in 16 sports, including handball, volleyball, basketball, futsal, swimming, athletics, shooting, karate, judo, tennis, cycling, ice hockey, table tennis, padel, and e-sports.
Tosin Ogunode, the Asian Games silver medalist, won the men's 100m sprint in 10.05 seconds, while Qatar's Ammar Ibrahim won the men's 400m final in 45.76 seconds.
Ogunode, the younger brother of four-time Asian Games gold medalist Femi, finished ahead of silver medalist Abdullah Abkar of Saudi Arabia, who clocked a time of 10.21 seconds.
Barakat Al Harthi of Oman took bronze in 10.30 seconds.
Samar Mansouri had previously won Qatar's first gold medal in the GCC Games, cleared the bar at 3.40m in the women's pole vault. Women are competing for the first time in seven sports, including futsal, e-sports, athletics, cycling, 3x3 basketball, padel and table tennis.
Qatar's fourth medal came in the men's 110m hurdles, where Saeed Al Absi finished second. Al Absi finished in 14.08 seconds, while Yaqoub Al Youha of Kuwait won gold in 13.65 seconds. Khalfan Al Jabri of Oman took bronze in 15.04 seconds.

Shooting competitions will kick off the third Gulf Games' second day (Tuesday) at the Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Olympic Shooting Complex. The competition will begin with a trap event in which competitors will shoot a round of 75 targets, followed by the 10m air pistol event at 10.30 a.m. and the finals. At 2 p.m., the 50m rifle finals will be held.
