Qatar's Hemeida bags gold in 400m hurdles, qualifies for Olympics and World Athletics Championships
Qatar’s Bassem Hemeida wins gold in the 400m hurdles at the 25th edition of the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok, qualifying for the Paris Olympics in 2024 and World Athletic Championships this year.
Hemeida clocked an impressive 48.64 seconds to win gold while Japan’s Yusaku Kodama followed close with a timing of 48.96 seconds to win silver. The bronze medal was won by India’s Santhosh Kumar who came in third.
Meanwhile, Qatar’s Yasser Salem won silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event clocking 8:39.17 seconds finishing behind Japan’s Ryoma Aoki who came in first with a timing of 8.34.91 seconds.
President of Qatar Olympic Committee HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani offered his congratulations to both athletes adding that Hemedia’s qualification for the Paris Olympics and World Athletic Championships is well deserved.

According to the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 medals table, Qatar has won two medals at the Championships with Japan heading the table with 29 medals, followed by China with 19 medals and India with 14 medals.
The Asian Athletics Championships that is being held in Bangkok from July 12-16 this year, has more than 500 athletes participating from around 41 Asian countries.
