Team Qatar added another gold and silver to its medal haul at the GCC Billiards and Snooker Championship after Bashar Hussein defeated his compatriot Walid Majed 11-10 in the billiards 9-Ball event yesterday in a match that lasted more than two hours.

Qatar now has two gold, one silver and one bronze at the seven-day tournament taking place at the Al Messila Resort in Doha with yesterday's result.

En route to the final, Hussein had defeated his Kuwaiti rival Ahmed Al Dulaimi 11-10 in the semi-finals, while Walid qualified after defeating the other Kuwaiti Hussein Al Sayafi 11-6.

The tournament, which ends today, involves top players from the six GCC countries - Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, and the UAE.

"Today's gold is compensation for the failure in the 10-ball and 8-ball competitions, and it also serves as a strong motivation for me and my colleague Majid before competing in the teams' competitions together on Tuesday on the final day of the championship," said the elated Bashar.

Majed, congratulated his colleague on his victory, noting that having two Qatari players reach the final is the most significant gain regardless of the winner or loser.

For his part, the tournament's director Sultan Al Suwaidi expressed his delight at the tournament's success both at the technical and organizational levels.

"The success achieved by the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation comes in light of hosting of the most prominent international championships which have made Doha the capital of sports in the world. It is a new testament to the high efficiency of the Qatari organizational cadres, which have made great efforts during the past few days," said Al Suwaidi

Al Suwaidi praised the technical performance of Qatar's national team players throughout the tournament, which resulted in winning the team gold medal in snooker and the gold and silver medals in the 9-ball competition and the bronze medal in the individual snooker competition.

He expressed his confidence that Qatari players will continue to excel in the pool and snooker 6 Reds competitions and win more medals to put Qatar at the top of the overall medals table on the final day of the tournament.
