Moving to a new country can feel both exciting and overwhelming, especially when adjusting to a unique culture like Qatar’s. For new expats, embracing the lifestyle and settling in can take time, but there are many ways to make the transition smoother. From understanding local customs to finding networks, here are practical tips to help new expats feel at home in Qatar faster.

Understand and respect the local culture

Qatar has a rich cultural heritage deeply rooted in Arabic traditions and Islamic customs. While the country is welcoming foreigners it’s essential to understand and respect local norms. Here are some tips to help.

  • Dress modestly : Qatar has a conservative dress code, especially in public places. While you don’t need to cover your head or wear traditional attire, it’s respectful to dress modestly.
  • Learn basic Arabic words : Though English is widely spoken, learning new Arabic words can go a long way in building connections. Simple words like “Shukran” (Thank You) and “Marhaba” (Hello) show respect and make interactions more enjoyable.
  • Adhere to public etiquette : Avoid public displays of affection, as these are generally not allowed. Similarly, always ask for permission before taking photos, especially when it involves people.

Join expat communities and social clubs

Building a network is key to feeling at home in any country. Qatar is home to a vibrant expat community with various groups and social clubs where you can meet people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Look for Facebook Whatsapp groups : Many expat communities in Qatar connect through social media. Joining Facebook groups such as “Expats in Qatar” or “Qatar Living” can keep you updated on events, gatherings, and advice from fellow expats.
  • Join professional and social clubs : Whether you are interested in sports, art, pr professional networking, Qatar has groups for almost every interest. Popular expat clubs include Doha Women’s group, Qatar Running Club, Doha Players, Qatar Toastmasters Club and so on.
  • Attend local events : Keep an eye on local events such as Bazaars & markets, cultural festivals, and art exhibitions. The more you engage with local activities, the quicker you’ll feel as part of the community.

Explore the best weekend spots in Qatar

Qatar is compact in size yet packed with fascinating spots for weekend adventures. Exploring these areas can help you unwind, connect with nature and experience the unique landscape of your new home.

  • Visit Souq Waqif : The traditional market is one of Doha’s most iconic spots filled with cafes, local shops, and traditional entertainment.
  • Explore Katara cultural village : This places offers a mix of art galleries, theater, and restaurants with beautiful views.
  • Relax at the Inland Sea : Venture out to the Inland Sea, it’s one of the few places in the world where sand dunes meets the sea with stunning landscapes and adventure.
  • Take a beach day : Qatar has several beautiful beaches and many hotels offer day passes to their beach areas giving you access to pool and private beach spaces.

Adapt to the climate

Qatari climate can be quite extreme, especially in the summer periods when the temperature spikes up to 40 degrees.

  • Stay hydrated and use sunscreen : Always carry water and use sunscreen when outdoors.
  • Dress for the heat : Light, breathable fabrics are your best friend. Stick to cotton, and linen and wear sunglasses.
  • Plan around peak heat : Avoid outdoor activities in mid-day during summer. Choose to go early morning or evening when the temperature gets cooler.

Get familiar with transport options

Qatar’s public transport system is well-developed and offers much convenience to get around Doha.

  • Use the Doha Metro: Fast, air-conditioned way to travel across the city.
  • Pick an electric scooter : Make those quick trips with the use of pay-as-you-go eScooters around Doha.
  • Rely on taxi apps : Services like Uber, Karwa are widely available.

Discover local and international cuisines

Qatar is a foodie paradise that offers everything from local dishes to international cuisines.

  • Sample Qatari cuisines : Traditional dishes like majboos, harees and are great to try in areas like Souq Waqif.
  • Take advantage of food festivals : Qatar hosts annual food festivals that showcase authentic, Filipino, Lebanese, African and Indian flavours and gives you the opportunity to try something new.

Prioritize your wellness

As you adjust to life in a new country, it is important to maintain your well-being.

  • Find a fitness community : There are many expat-friendly gyms, yoga studios and outdoor clubs in Qatar.
  • Seek help when needed : There are many people who will go above and beyond to help when you need it, so seek help in navigating ways to settle down in your new home.
