Qatar owns many high-profile assets in the UK. Many of these cost billions of Pounds. These assets are purchased with the help of the Qatar Investment Authority.
Qatar Investment Authority is the sovereign wealth fund of the State of Qatar, and is a respected global investor.
Here are some of the assets in the UK:
- Qatar has a majority stake in the company behind Claridge's hotel.
- Purchasing Harrods cost Qatar around £1.5 billion. Qatar bought Harrods from businessman Mohamed Al Fayed in 2010.
- Qatar owns 95% of The Shard, which is western Europe's tallest skyscraper.
- Qatari Diar, which is a real estate development company established by QIA, purchased the Olympic Village to turn it into a housing complex.
- Qatar has a majority stake in Connaught Hotel and is a major shareholder of Camden Market.
- QIA and Brookfield Properties jointly bought the financial district Canary Wharf for £2.6 billion.
- US embassy building in Mayfair is also owned by QIA.
