A social organization in Qatar, Hifz Al Naema announced that as many as 466,014 people have benefitted from its activities in 2019 that include distributing food and in-kind donations to underprivileged workers and families in Qatar as well as raising awareness on food wastage.

Hifz Al Naema, which translates as ‘protecting the blessings,’ was established over a decade ago as a community initiative.

The organization introduced the first food bank in Qatar, which collects leftover food from restaurants, events, and other venues across the country, repackages it, and shares it with needy workers and families.

The center also runs a charitable warehouse where it stocks excess donations received from generous citizens and residents. These include clothing, furniture, and electronic equipment. These items are then sold at nominal prices to families with low-income.

According to Hifz Al Naema’s annual report, the center received about 389,688 kg of food donations and 100,004 pieces of in-kind donations last year, which were handed over to those most in need of the necessities in Qatar.

Among the donations, the center received were 431,359 cooked meals, 78,718 kg of canned foods, 62,535 kg of fruits and vegetables, 23,836 kg of rice and flour, and 3,641 kg of meats and chicken as well as 3,404 kg of sugar and 1,878 liters of oil.

Hifz Al Naema distributed the meals to at least 256,243 workers and 26,251 families.

The center offered food supplies to about 650 families while in-kind donations benefitted about 555 cases in 2019.

The in-kind donations amounted to 12,283 carpets and linens as well as 17,814 furniture items. About 4,551 electrical appliances, as well as 3,613 electronic devices, were also given to those in need.

In terms of clothing, the center gave away at least 56,969 articles of clothing to underprivileged community members in addition to 4,774 bags containing clothes.

Apart from the donations, the center also strives to raise awareness of food wastage and ways to prevent it. About 500 students participated in Hifz al Naema’s awareness-raising programs last year.

The center also supported about 461 cases with financial assistance.

Hifz Al Naema also focused efforts on ensuring the needy workers and families enjoy the blessings on special occasions such as Ramadan and Eid.

About 154,860 workers and 25,000 families enjoyed the center’s various iftar arrangements during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
