Qatar’s highest-rated chess player and the country’s first chess grandmaster (1998), is the star of this edition of our Prominent People in Qatar series.

46-year- old Al-Modiahki, who became an International Master in 1991, is a legendary chess player who has several international and regional honors to his name.

Recognized as the Player of the Century of the Arab Countries by the Arab Chess Federation, Al-Modiahki has not only represented Qatar on the global chess scene but has also trained several talents in Qatar to realize their potential in the game.

In his leadership capacity, Al-Modiahki has also been a driving force behind some major chess championships in Qatar such as the Qatar Master Open.

The Qatari grandmaster wears several hats. In addition to being the President of the Qatar Chess Federation, he is also the International Director of FIDE (World Chess Federation) Management Board.

His brilliant talent and expertise led him to the position of Vice-President of the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) in May 2019.
