WATCH: How much do you know about Qatar's flag?
In the spirit of the upcoming Qatar National Day, today's QL Flashback Friday looks into the meaning of the Qatari flag.
Do you remember what its features signify? Here's a little refresher:
Officially adopted on July 9, 1971, Qatar's flag is a simple yet powerful symbol of patriotism, pride, and dignity for the nation.
The maroon shade represents the bloodshed during the wars Qatar fought in the second half of the 19th century while the white color reflects the internationally recognized symbol of peace.
The color maroon on the flag is known as ‘Al Adaam’ and comes from a dye that originated from the Bin Ghannam Island near Al Khor.
The nine points dividing the two colors on the flag also hold historical significance, representing Qatar as the 9th member of the Trucial Coast Convention of 1916.
Earlier, in 2013, Qatar broke the world record by creating the largest ever flag, equivalent to the size of 14 football pitches.
Due to its supreme importance and prestige, it is illegal to display a damaged flag or add photographs, texts or design to it. In case of any such violation, individuals may face imprisonment from 6 months to 3 years or fined up to QR200,000.
