WATCH: Three tips to beat the heat this summer!
The highest recorded temperature in Qatar was of 50.4°C (122.7°F) in 2010. With temperatures so dangerously high in the summertime, it’s important to find ways to beat the heat. We looked into simple methods to try during these hot summer months to help you keep cool.
First off, start eating spicier foods! It may be difficult to believe, because spice tends to make us feel like we’ve lit a stove inside ourselves, but the truth is that it can help cool your body down.
This is due to the fact that eating spices raises your body’s internal temperature to match the outside. As a result, your circulation increases and you begin to sweat, thus allowing your body to cool off as it evaporates from your skin. This phenomenon is called gustatory sweating.
You may have noticed that cuisine in hotter regions such as South America and India, for example, tends to be spicier, and it’s partly because of this.
On another note, something to avoid during the summer—oddly enough—is a cold shower. Stick to lukewarm water if you can help it, simply because a sudden cold bath will cause your body to overproduce heat later to make up for the sudden cold drop.
However, if you’re craving a quick cool down, cold water may come in handy if you find yourself overheated. You can hold the inside of your wrists under a tap to cool the blood vessels there, as one of the body’s major veins runs through this part of you.
Another surprising way to stay cool is to eat less, but often. Small meals take less energy to digest, and do not overheat the body in the effort to digest them. Eating small meals on a regular basis also keeps your metabolism on its toes, which is always a plus!
