WATCH: Qatari mountaineer raises awareness about living with disability
Prominent Qatari mountaineer, Fahad Bader has been raising awareness about life with disability following an incident in July this year.
While attempting to summit the Broad Peak Mountain in Pakistan, Fahad suffered a tragic accident resulting in severely frostbitten fingers on his left hand.
The frostbite meant Fahad’s fingers would have to be amputated.
The climber decided to document his journey using this life-altering incident as a chance to shine a spotlight on living with a disability.
In a video, Fahad said, “I consider this a great opportunity to raise awareness about living with a disability, especially those who need artificial limbs whether here in Qatar or in the Arab world.”
“The message I want to deliver to anyone watching this is that if you ever had a life-changing accident like this in your life, you should know that disabled people are just like you and me,” he stressed.
“And you can live your life to the fullest with the disability.”
In another post on his Facebook page, Fahad wrote, “My life, my body will never be the same again after this life-changing surgery and even the most basic tasks will be a great challenge. How do I cope with something like this? How do I accept that my life has suddenly been utterly changed? How will I continue with my hobbies? Will I still possess the passion and capability to conquer more mountains?
“The answers to these questions play repeatedly in my mind and they only lie within me. My resolve to press on unhindered is the only hope I cling to. I remain eternally grateful to be alive despite the utter terror of the uncertainty of the future. I am also grateful for the incredible response and support I get daily from all of you.”
