Clean and safe water is essential to our body. Piped water should be regularly tested for potability. The underground water pipes can become contaminated if they are corroding; and if they are located near septic tanks where seepage can occur during water interruptions.

And guys, for your information, E. coli is not a harmful organism that can cause illness (see 2 posts above). It is merely an indicator of the relative pollution of water. As you know almost all E. coli are found in feces, and that they survive for longer periods of time in water, that is why it is used to detect if the water has fecal contamination. So if E. coli is found in the water, it has fecal contamination and is therefore not safe to drink. But it doesn't say 100% that you will get illness. The question is: Will you still drink water if you know that it has fecal contamination though it might be safe?

The rule should be at least 2x or once a year, and monthly for bottling companies to have the water tested for coliforms (eg. E. coli, other fecal bacteria). I hope the KAHRAMAA regularly does this..

I still don't have a job yet here.. I'm a mircobiologist, maybe I can apply at KAHRAMAA :) ..ha ha

Please also read this page:

"In reality, all water is "healthy" as long as it doesn't possess high

levels of harmful contaminants, which tap water does not. In May 2005,

the ABC news program "20/20" sent five different national brands of

bottled water and one sample of tap water taken from a New York City

drinking fountain to a microbiologist for testing. The lab tested for

contaminants that can cause illness, like E.coli. The results showed no

difference whatsoever, in terms of unhealthy contaminants, between the

bottled waters and the tap water. So perhaps it's a matter of

semantics, but the issue seems to be more one of purity than of

healthiness: Some bottled waters do contain fewer total dissolved

solids than tap water, but most scientists agree that the levels of

dissolved solids in tap water are not harmful to human health."

I know that the bottled water is very cheap, even if you total the montly expenditure, but I have always used tap water to save my next generation from the hazards of disposing off billions of plastic bottles. Just imagine: how many plastic bottles are being consumed in the world on the name of 'pure' water. I'm sure this is a tactic of bottled water companies (multibillion dollar business) to scare us from the 'dangers' of tap water and keep earning. I read an article about coke and pepsi admitting July 2007 that as opposed to the label, their water (dasani and aquafina) is NOT fresh spring water, just the filtered tap water. So you can see....

I have been using tap water for years now (even without filter) and not a single bad thing happened to me ever. For more cautious people, please use a filter at home and get rid of this business playing on our fears.

Also, please read this from the following link:

"In a single year, manufacturers around the world use about 2.7 million tons of plastic to bottle water. Most of those bottles are a type of plastic called polyethylene terepthalate, or PET, which is produced from crude oil.

To produce bottles to meet yearly bottled-water demand in the United

States alone requires 1.5 million barrels of oil. That much oil could

power about 100,000 cars for a year, according to the Earth Policy

Institute.

And almost 90 percent of bottled-water bottles end up in the

trash or on the ground, not in recycling bins. They can take up to

1,000 years to degrade, and when they do, they can leak harmful

chemicals into the ground, contaminating ground water -- ironically

inducing a new cycle of pollution that means bottled water may actually

be a necessity in the United States some day."

better be safe, water is very important part in our life...

use a good bottled water... or use purified water (with proper filter).

If you want to use tap water, better check the mineral in the water...

some mineral is dangerous (like iron from rusty pipe), but it will be a little bit troublesome.

I have a lot of problems with my skin (pimples, keloids, etc) when I drink boiled tap water. And it's in Singapore which the tap water can be drink...

Hi,We don't need to drink the water directly from the pipes, instead we can use water purifies like 'Brita'. how ever it is my perception.

As far as I understand there was an article in the Gulf Times last week revoking any claims about the contaminated bottled water.

I drink directly from tap. Nothing happened to me for last two months. It is only the water bottling companies are scaring the people. People have been surviving on normal drinking water for centuries with out any problem. You will get immunity once you start drinking it.
