The ever changing landscape of work environments and technology advancement means that now more than ever, employers and employees need to ensure that their skill set remains relevant and aligned with the changes. From knowledge, to skills and abilities, with the right training, companies can continue to grow their performance and results in the workplace.

In fact, one sobering report by Dell Technologies predicts that 85% of the jobs that will be needed in 2030 haven’t even been invented yet. With new technologies constantly being introduced and we drift closer and closer to the metaverse, it’s imperative that employers and employees stay ahead of the game.

Training is always beneficial. By providing employees with the right learning and development opportunities, companies are able to achieve their goals quicker, while also offering employees the opportunities needed to keep moving forward in their careers.

Here’s why training and development in the workplace is vital and needs to be made into a key focus of business strategy.

1 - Increased employee performance

It may sound obvious, but any employee afforded the opportunity to be trained and further their skills and education is able to do their job better. From interns to managers, training benefits every employee and it can be applied to all sectors and departments within your organisation.

Frequent training sessions will also leave your employees feeling more confident and better equipped at dealing with the challenging aspects of their job. As they gain a firmer grasp of the industry and a better understanding of the responsibilities, both their confidence, and consequently, their performance, will grow.

2 - Employees will take ownership of company’s aims and objectives

One great way to ensure that every employee has a wider understanding of the business and feel aligned with the company’s goals and objectives, is by ensuring that a collaborative environment is created. If the company is made up of different departments, make sure that there is open communication between the different departments and teams. A collaborative working space ensures that employees are learning from each other.

Don’t limit technical trainings to department-specific lists, by opening it a little to the wider business, you’ll find others interested in supporting parts of the business they weren’t previously involved with. By seeing the greater picture, employees will naturally feel more inspired to achieve the company’s goals and hold themselves accountable and take ownership over these objectives.

3 -  Decrease staff turnover

Bringing in fresh blood and ideas is a great way to ensure that the business doesn’t remain static and outdated. But too high of a staff turnover can be disruptive to the workflow and a financial drain on the company. In fact, upskilling your existing staff is a much more financially rewarding return than recruiting and hiring. Investing in training is a far more effective way; by supporting their career development, employees will feel more valued, and as such are more likely to remain loyal to the company.

4 - Increase employee engagement

Nothing takes out the spark as quickly as mundane repetition - and unfortunately, with a large portion of most jobs requiring repetitive tasks, it’s no wonder that motivation drops. Employee engagement is vital to keeping up morale. Happy employees are 12% more productive and companies that employ regular feedback sessions note a 15% decrease in turnover.

5 -  Business wins

Frequent trainings means that departments are always ahead of the game - ideal for keeping your competitors lagging behind. By cultivating an environment where training is a priority, employees will keep an eye out on all the new developments happening in their field and flag it to the business. By staying ahead of the game, the business will continue developing and ultimately improve the bottom line.
