Hello my Future Friends,
After briefly speaking to Simon Jennings and Richard Boustead I knew that Future International Football Academy Doha, is where I wanted to develop as a coach and further more as a person. Working abroad as an Uefa A licenced football coach was an early ambition of mine and now has become a reality. It happened very quickly and within a few weeks' notice I knew I was moving to Doha, Qatar. Meeting the team of coaches, being introduced to all the members and visiting Ain Khaled and Lekhwiya SC facilities made me realise, this was a place where I'm going to enjoy coming to work every day.
Back home in Mayo, Ireland. I was starting off my 2nd season as Head Coach of Castlebar Celtic First team. In the first season, we finished third in the league and won the Connaught Gold Cup, their first trophy since 2011. I was also the Clubs Coaching Coordinator where all coaches collaborated in increasing opportunities for players to develop with the emphasis on the club rather than individual teams, focussing on player pathway from our academy level through to the first team.
My interest in coaching didn't just start there. Playing for Sligo Rovers for a total of nine years with a few transfers (We won't name them all) to other clubs in Ireland gave me 13 years experience as a goalkeeper in the League of Ireland. My most enjoyable period was the one at Sligo Rovers where I was fortunate enough to be part of a strong squad that entertained supporters with our free flowing football. These years were the clubs most successful period in their history, winning 1 league, 3 FAI cups, 1 League Cup and a Setanta Cup. They say "Winning is a habit" but I have to also acknowledge that the players and staff that I shared the dressing rooms with were hungry, craved success and were as equally as ambitious as I was.
When I look back now I can see that this was a turning point in my life as a player and a person. In the dying moments of the 2009 FAI Cup Final we were winning 1-0 when I found myself in a 1v1 scenario. What happened next, to this day is still a blur but defined how I changed my career pathway as a person. I obstructed the striker and pulled him to the ground giving away a penalty and ended up conceding another goal in injury time, losing the final 2-1. After that final the feeling of guilt and the 'what if's' echoed in my head. This is when I released that I wanted to start my own football academy to help younger players to develop and learn. This helped me focus on my own playing career and I do believe in the phrase, "Good things happen to good people".
Exactly one year later we found ourselves back in the 2010 FAI Cup final. This time I was mentally prepared so that I would enjoy this occasion and relax in the environment of playing in front of over 36,000 supporters. 0-0 through normal time and 0-0 through extra time leading into penalties would now make me or break me. Still living with the experience of the 2009 final, what happened next sometimes I still pinch myself to see if it was real.

Okay, yes this became a life changing experience. Media coverage nationally and now internationally, life became a little bit different as it was an equalled World Record! But my focus didn't change regarding where my real passion was and that was helping others to over come their fears. Sport is an amazing tool and sometimes as coaches we instinctively direct our views towards that winning mentality. Not all players, unfortunately, will turn out to be Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or Seamus Coleman. In truth, the dropout rate is obviously much higher, statistics suggesting up to 70% before the age of 13.
We actually effect these kids more in the long term as they develop into their adulthood. Their experiences in football could impact them to live a healthy lifestyle, improve cognitive and motor skills in their workplace, apply discipline and dedication in daily routines, improve social skills with other people, have an inclusive attitude towards all religions, culture, race and most importantly mental health awareness. A year on, in the 2011 FAI Cup final, I was on the bench. I know I was disappointed too! But to his credit Brendan Clarke was the best goalkeeper in Ireland that year and he went on to smash club goalkeeping records. Again the final found itself in extra time and something crazy happened again. I came on it the 119th minute for the shoot-out. Would lightening strike twice?

So this is the main reason why coaching is not just my hobby, but my life. I've been fortunate to be involved in some inspirational occasions and worked with some very special players, managers and good people in football, running their clubs . Sharing my experiences and helping other future players to evolve in their pathways to becoming adults. The bonus is, we can develop these players into footballers.
