Recently Future Football got the chance to meet a professional footballer who has played in the top division of Italy, Spain and England. Chico Flores now spends his time playing for Lekwhiya Sports club and he took time out his busy schedule to meet our very own academy.
To have a professional footballer who has represented his country Spain on a professional level was both an exciting and daunting prospect for Future Football.
What is it like to meet and chat with a professional footballer? We see various portrayals of professional footballers in the media. The overriding theme is that of arrogance and extravagance; men in their early 20s driving Ferraris and porches.
So what was the reality like when Chico came to meet us?
In fact, our experience was entirely different to what many would expect. Chico Flores is a humble man. A player who could of easily been in bed on his day off, had come to meet Future football at 8 in the morning on a Saturday! Not only this but he took time to speak with parents/ players and even coaches.
Chico spoke to players of all ages offering advice and trading jokes and laughs. It was an honour to have a professional footballer at our academy. It was an honour not just to have a professional footballer, but to have one who was so warm and welcoming with players and parents alike.
Maybe both the media and fans alike should not be as quick to jump to stereotypes and presumptions about professional footballers. We would do well to remember that they are humans like us; just with a different job!
