2018 demonstrated continued success for Qatar Rail, as the Doha Metro project is now close to its target well before initially anticipated. As of September 2018, it is affirmed to be 90% complete and will be open to commuters within a year’s period. A few months ago, Qatar living visited the construction sites during the preliminary phase of development to give you a sneak peek of the project. Since then, the Doha Metro has seen substantial progress and growth.

Numerous achievements have been made in a matter of months, including the near completion of Phase 1 of the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram. The demonstration of the systems underwent successful completion, as the final stages of testing and commissioning for the first section of Phase 1 commenced on time – with trains running beneath Doha are functioning in a fully automatic mode and at maximum capacity. Five stations operating the Red Line were also assigned to the Operator RKH including the Economic Zone, Ras Bu Fontas, Al Wakra, Al Doha Al Jadeda, Oqba Ibn Nafie, which are declared the first to open in the impending launch. As per systematic process, QCDD inspections were also completed at the mentioned stations, to ensure passenger safety and adequate site maintenance.

The world-class integrated rail network has also fully completed the installation of gates, Platform Screen Doors (PSD) and Automatic Fare Collection (AFC), which are designed to make the commuting experience effortless and swift for all future travellers. To ensure smooth operation and experience, all integrated testing for the systems are half-way complete. Additionally, all physical works for the Depot Red Line are complete, as all depot buildings are now executed and QCDD certificates were granted to 15 of them. Service Providers have also moved into a number of stations, certain parts of the depot as well as the stabling yard and other operational readiness activities are also well progressed. Presently, 53 trains have been delivered, 15 of which are fully tested and dedicated to section 1 and ready for smooth operations.

This long-standing project by Qatar Rail will provide world-class service to major routes in Doha and crosstown connections that is bound to significantly reduce travel times, benefiting multiple areas across the region. In addition to being safe and practical, there is an evident medley of traditional marks and contemporary architectural concepts that were used to create a visually attractive and convenient mode of travel, as the design and concept of Doha Metro finally come to life.
