such a pity ...I have been hearing news about the poor condition of the construction workers in Dubai, but this is the first time I saw a picture of their condition. No wonder they held a strike or protest a no. of times.
But currently in Dubai, they are building a Labor Camp City (not sure of the exact name), that will accomodate thousands of workers. In one bedroom, it will accomodate only 4 persons. Well, this will be a relief for the poor workers. At least the UAE gov't. is taking action to improve their condition.

Something will be done about 'slavery' in the Gulf, it's just a matter of time. In the meantime you can donate clothes, household goods etc...to give these poor souls some hope :(

pitiable ...Conditions here are almost as bad if not even worse. The Gulf states have been built on what is pretty much bonded labor. The companies that bring these hapless people over are mostly owned by wealthy sheikhs, thus making them practically untouchable. The embassies of the countries are fairly spineless and rarely protest openly.
ironic, a country like India is the biggest buyer or will be, of Qatari gas, yet their citizens are treated like slaves. perhaps the government should say something like we won't buy your gas unless you treat our workers like human beings.
We all remember how Qatar bragged about how they pulled off the Asian Games. But how many Qataris wereout there doing manual labor to build stadiums and whatever? Compare that to say sydney or athens, where actaul citizens were out ther doing the hard work and can rightfully claim their respectives as THEIR success.

Labour Camps ...The situation in Qatar couldn't be any better. I've heard from reliable sources that many of the construction workers we see in those blue tunics go back to their camps every night and sleep in those very same outfits. Most of them don't have water to bathe with at least once a day. As for food, who knows, whether they even get one square meal at all. Sad, but true indeed.
I wish we, at Qatar Living could get together and do something in some small way to help the unfortunate ones living in labour camps.

I am not defending anybody or any country's human rights or labor related issues. BUT, regarding the pics published here, I have received them by email and were introduced as pics taken in a prison in Iraq.
Have seen reports about the bad living conditions of laborers in Dubai. But how bad, I cannot tell.
In Qatar, the labor department is arranging inspection visits to labor camps to ensure that laborers are accommodated with minimm acceptable standards. Also, the labor department here is conducing inspection to construction sites to ensure that laborers are working in a safe environment and safety requirements are fulfilled.
How serious and efficient the inspections are? I am not sure.

Pics ...I very much doubt that these pictures are taken from within a labour camp, certainly none that I have visited in either Dubai or Doha. I do not for one minute suggest that the camps there or here are all good. there are examples of good and bad accomodation everywhere.
It should also be noted that some labour happily accept an allowance for housing and share a room with others, the more in the room the cheaper for all!
I note that someone stated in the thread that the govt here carry out inspections, maybe they do, but what happens with their findings, do you really think they will take action against the sponsors who are usually very prominent people in qatar? You just have to observe the driving standards here and think about the policing! end of story!
If people really want to make improvement then obtaining verifiable evidence and sending back to home country for publication in local and national newspapers may help! just a suggestion!

Heartbreaking!!! ...Goodmorning everyone,
When I first saw the pictures it broke my heart and crushed my spirit. Whether this picture was taken in a prison or in any construction site or anywhere, no human being should be living in this type of condition. This is inhumane!
This is also a wake up call to all of us of how truly blessed we are bec. most of the time we take what we currrently have for granted. And I have to admit that I am guilty of that. I'm glad that I saw these pictures because I am reminded of how truly blessed I am that I have a decent place to live, eat three meals a day, and a good health.
You all have a wonderful weekend and I hope to see you all in a couple of months.

labour camps provide by company are good if compare to those who arrange by themself.
so companies provide very nice accommodation.
there are thousands of people who have to arrange own,so they live like this, and the reason is their salaries are very low.
for a small room you have to pay 3000-4000 and their salaries are 600-1000,so how can they pay it.
they have to send money for their big families.

Is it what they left their families for? when what they get is not sufficient, they should demand more. There is a huge gap between the wages of literate n illiterate labors. A few mouse clicks a day earn IT professionls 10 times more than these labors! They still complain!!
I know an Indian man here who runs a grocery store in industrial area, works 4 am to 12 am 7days a week and sleeps in his shop uses the ajacent camp's bath room. he makes enough profits but due to greed chose that life for himself. the Governemnts should enforce some laws on these people to improve their living conditions.

Qatar Labour Camps ...I've just shown the pictures of the labour camps in Dubai to my husband.
He works in a company that employs a lot of labourers from many different nationalities. He said that in Qatar it's impossible to have workers live in such conditions as they are inspected by the government and companies are fined if they do not meet a certain standard.
In his company, workers of the same nationality live together, each nationality has their own kitchen for cooking, there are a/c's and proper bathrooms and facilities for laundry. Unfortunately they do have to share rooms with 6 - 8 people in a room. He says that this is more or less standard in Qatar. Most workers before coming to Qatar know that they will be sharing rooms with others.
Hope that this lets people know that it is more or less not possible for people to live like this in Qatar.
Well i sincerely hope not.

The pictures are worse than ...The pictures are revolting! It's worse than that of a Nazi Concentration Camp!
Yet, nobody can help them except their employer. They should return to their own country.
They don't need clothes or bags.
All they need is a proper place to sleep and good toilets.
This nobody can donate.
There should be proper laws like QP HSE laws regarding labor camps, and QP enforces them(at least in Dukhan they do) where private companies working under QP contracts are required to meet some basic standards in keeping with standards of other countries.
In a standard labor camp in Qatar there should be:
1. proper fencing
2. Enough space per head(7 sq.m per head).
3. Kitchens with fire resistant false ceiling.
4. Dining halls.
5. Local exhaust ventilation and AC.
6. Toilets with anti skid floor tiles and common glazed tiles daddo.
The number of toilets should be 1 W/C and 1 Bath for every 6 persons.

By removing all the workers from these poor work places. i mean all the countries, indonesia, india , korea, nepal , pakistan, all of them at the same time. labour costs will go up as the workers will be imported from, other higher developed countries.
The gulf will lose a lot of its advantages of businesses relocating overseas etc. The gulf ill then have to find a way to make a deal. they should hold out on the gulf, until a reasonable deal is made.
