Memorial stand by Qatari's for UK man in Doha

angelwings's picture

It is a terribly tragedy whenever anyone dies needlessly.

But if any of you were around when John, the Producer of the Shakespeare play in the Doha Theatre, was killed during a suicide bombing a couple of years back, then you'll remember that many Qatari people stood for over an hour at a Memorial on the very ground used by the Bomber. It may be nice to show our solidarity and sympathy for this young Qatari boy in the same way. Perhaps on the Corniche, or somewhere where a gathering can take place.

Certainly as a Brit I am very saddened that anyone from this country going to the UK - trusting that all is civilised and safe - is abused, and in this instance died, however it came about.

If anyone has similar feelings and would like to show their sympathy and condolences toward the family, perhaps we can name a place and time.

OK. First we need to contact the authorities to make sure its not going to be a problem or breaking any laws, but if we suggested that we gathered on the Corniche perhaps at the Sheraton end where the grassy park is, or over towards the Airport area, on the ground opposite the Port area, where the grassy verge is by the Museum - perhaps that would be big enough. But maybe we've got to see what the authorities suggest. He did live over by the airport. I'll speak to one of his extended family members.

Anyone got contacts with the ministries, and speaks arabic?

Angelwings.

Here's a reply to an email I was sent from Oryx asking if I had any ideas to help out.

There are two things that could be done and I have a great idea.
Do you know that little bit of land on the corniche which sticks out? Sometimes they pitch a tent on there and do the Al Kass discussion? Its close to the Diwan area. That would be a very good place to gather. And even then, after gathing, leaving a token there. I can obtain permission if you like. I really enjoy helping out, but so far in two occassions when I've helped ILQ members have, although the purpose is to help, they weren't acknowledged, not even in the papers as they acknowledged QL. We need to make it clear that we're all a team.

Anyway, in Qatar we have an old tradition of creating a small basket from leaves and putting our tooth in it and letting it float out to see. We believe you are sending a part of yourself back to nature. Perhaps you could do something similar to that. Now our dear Qatari boy is going back to nature and back to God.

Perhaps meet up at that point, have a few banners noting what is going on, leave some flowers on that area (it would have to be in a box or something or else they'll blow away), have a moment of silence, and end it.

I have been reading the other news thread about this and it was a shame that before thinking of how to pay respects to the deceased, much speculation and animosity has arose. I know members of the family, after all this is a very small country, and it is important to show we support them in their grief.

This is a bit close to home for me, as I also have my mother-in-law living in Hastings area!!...

Can we have this in motion by the weekend.

To msanonymous... thanks for your condolences, I'm sure they will be read, and appreciated.

Thanks,

"Two minutes silence will be held in Hastings on Monday in memory of Qatari student Mohamed al-Majed.
Council officials in the British town – where 16-year-old Mohamed was fatally injured a week ago – said the commemoration would take place outside a major shopping centre at 11am.
A spokeswoman confirmed that community leaders, council officials, councillors and members of the police would attend the gathering to remember the vibrant young teenager who lost his life following a “racist” altercation with a group of local youths.
Councillor Peter Pragnell, leader of Hastings Borough Council said: “We would like as many people as possible to come along to remember Mohamed and also to send out a powerful message, not only to the people who did this, but to his family and friends to show them the people in Hastings will not accept this."

I know it's short notice but it would a stance of solidarity to coordinate the timings.
Just an idea.

I dont see why this can't be done on the weekend, although I'd prefer it on Saturday, for the sole reason that i'd like to participate as well and I have to visit my mother in Bahrain and I'll be back on that day.

As mentioned the family is my old family's neighbour. Back in the day when we lived in a small village area.

Oryx was suggesting that we just get a bunch of flowers and hand it over to the family .

angelwings's picture

angelwings said Seems Amnesia and I know the folks, so we'll get their input ...

I still feel the solidarity gathering would be good, rather than the 'bunch of flowers' - nice idea Oryx, but I think this is bigger perhaps. It is sending out more than just a message of sympathy to the family, a gathering is an international thing, crossing borders and boundaries, whether flowers are left, or baskets of leaves...as Amnesia said, we want the family to see that we're with them, and not trying to ignore the situation. ? If we do the Basket of leaves, I'm not sure where we get the tooth from Amnesia? That's not meant to be flippant by the way.

Anyway, its time to be one, and share the pain.

Will find out what I can anyway re family approval - as will Amnesia.

Weekend would be best, as many families may like to participate, and school won't be a problem then. Saturday seems best as Friday will have lots of prayers anyway at the various Mosques no doubt.

andysand's picture

andysand said good idea ...

Count me in. U..K has become a very unruly place. Having lived in London for 14 years after leaving my native Scotland I found that over the years the situation has got worse and there are less and less family values. The law must put an end to people being able to take someones life as part of their night out ritual. They must put people away for a very long time if they carry out these thuggish deeds. This poor boy died because the law in U.K. turns a blind eye to unrully behavior and its now time to stop it. A very good idea to hold a few minutes silence. A bit ashamed to be Brittish these days when things like this happen. My thoughts to the family.

the platform of Qatarliving organize all such volunteer activities...
Just to clear you one doubt that WE (QLVG) never do any volunteer work with the intention to attract media attention or for any kind of publicity.

I myself was surprised when we saw media taking our pictures and interviewing our QLVG members ...

There are so many small volunteer activities we do on QL and outside QL but we never ever tell on QL forum because I believe that doing such thing with the intention of getting publicity will not serve the purpose in the eye of Allah(GOD).

Also I don't remember if I have met you before? I remember 'WHOAMI' who I met during our HBK campaign..

Hope this is clear to you and we are always thankful for supporting QL and QLVG in particular :-)

Coming to the point, lets meet along with Anglewings and other QLVG members at any of the coffee shop and kick start this campaign, ofcourse in this case we will seek media attention for the public awareness once we agree on Venue ....

i read all the threads and as far as i know Qatar( as i m here from my grand father days and born here) it would be difficult to arrange meeting in museum or sheraton as angel wings said but as qatar tradition, if they need to discuss anything they are giving priority to meet place as majlis aur put khaima. wht we can do is we can arrange for the khaima and invite his family members and there we can have 2-3 minute silence and pray for him, instead of giving flowers, cards etc... better to do this...

angelwings's picture

angelwings said timings.... projected ...

If all the permissions go thru, we will arrange to meet at 5pm Saturday 6th August, on the land (yet to be confirmed): And at exactly 5.25 until 5.30pm, we will hold 5 minutes silence. We will disperse at 5.35pm.

For those fasting, there will then be time to return to their homes for the breaking of the fast, prior to the guns going off at around 6pm.

We will update on any new developement, and inform you via text/emails with possible media coverage/information as well.

The reason for this stand is as quoted from andysand - "I found that over the years the situation has got worse and there are less and less family values. The law must put an end to people being able to take someones life as part of their night out ritual".

was part of a fracas which occurred in the UK. It seems he fell and fatally hit his head on the kerb during an incident which could have easily have happened on a pool table in The Ramada, here.

I don't think this is quite the same as 'John' of the Doha Players being involved in a purposeful explosion of the Playhouse.

I have every sympathy with the young man's family but I don't feel that more is required than perhaps, as amnesia and possibly Oryx suggested, a bouquet of flowers from a token few to be floated out to sea.

I agree with yaghazali - discreet, yet meaningful.

Any large gathering I feel would be inappropriate.

Just IMHO

..but I worry that too many people will turn up, and I'd rather be prepared for any eventuality, and have the room/area/space to deal with it. Which is why a large outside area seemed better.

It may be better to start at 5pm, and finish by 5.15 to make sure everyone can get home who needs to prepare for Iftar. Of course everyone will be there earlier than the 5pm start probably, as parking, walking to and from cars etc, as you say, will take time. But we'll see what feedback we get from the ministry anyway, and take it from there.

Thanks for the input.

angelwings's picture

angelwings said What time evening... would you suggest ...

As we haven't heard back from the Officials, it may be that we will do it on Monday, one week after the original stand in UK.

Bearing in mind that lots of families won't want to travel during the crazy post iftar traffic... I'd like to know when you were thinking

The thing about doing it at around 4.45 to 5.00pm is that there is no traffic to contend with, and that is a big plus for that time of day.
Angelwings.

angelwings's picture

angelwings said THE STAND: 4.45 - 5.00pm... BRING something YELLOW ...

We will go on the Monday, exactly one week after the original stand made in the UK.

Because of the Ramadan timings, and the heat, it seems best to arrange for a stand at 4.45 until 5.00pm. Thus allowing those who need to leave quickly for the Iftar period time to drive back home again. There will be no particular time of silence, except during the 15 minute period mentioned above.

We will signify our agreement to stand against this kind of meaningless violence, and show our solidarity with the family of the Qatari Boy.

To be recognised, we will BRING SOMETHING YELLOW. It can be a flower, a balloon, an armband, or even an item of clothing, anything that will distinguish the stand.

There is not going to be any formal spot for meeting, other than on the actual Corniche itself, that way we don't have to wait (forever) for permits etc. We will not be forming a 'crowd' in any particular place, so a permit will not be required. Only that we will quietly walk or stand on the Corniche area, with our YELLOW distinguishing marker.
