Randr ...I thought Muttawah means "Muslim Holy Person", cause there are a few guys with long beards and short dis-das or thoub (Don't know if the spelling is right). Not as strict, however, you need to respect the law of the land.
Having said that, Qatar is more open than Saudi. We have different religious gatherings within the country approved by the govt.
There is a syndicate where you can buy booze (as long as you get a basic salary of Qrs.4,000/-).
The star hotels serve booze.
You can stay out late at night without being questioned, unless you walk funny.
List anything specific you would like to know??

Mostly if Mutawah(as they ...Mostly if Mutawah(as they are called in Saudi Arabia) hassle Westerners. My wife and her friends were hasseled, in Saudi. After 11 years in Saudi Arabia I know we know how to respect the Muslim culture. I was just wondering if they exsisted in Qatar. I know we are guests and act accordingly.

Good Morning Randr ...They do, but do not intefere with westerners or any other.
Read some of the other post and you will see, Qatar is moving towards a more cosmopolitan city.
If you are in Saudi, means you are a GCC Resident, you can walk into qatar airport and get a visa on arrival. Come and experience the city for a few days to get a feel.
It is pretty good compared to Saudi, the only thing that gets us residence, is the spiraling house rents.
Peace

Sunni-qataris follows the Hanbali school of law & shiat-muslim folllows ja'afari law (In saudi shiat muslim are submitted forcly to follow wahabis law).
There is no religous police in Qatar, it never had.

Years Ago... ...I know that those Muttawahs you are talking about used to walk in the Internet Cafes here and make sure the people were not looking at anything improper, before the censoring game of course. I dont know if they were police, but this is the only thing I know of.

There is no religious police ...There is no religious police here. Nobody is going to harrass your wife. She doesn't have to cover, and she can go wherever she pleases.

There is no religeous ploce ...There is no religeous ploce in qatar, only religeous court which doesnt apply to foreigners. There is criminal court and religeous court systems, the criminal court deals with your everyday legal troubles, and the religeous court deals with specific things that religeon has covered.

talking about censors... ...I heard that the guys who censor or block the obscene web sites have to be relieved of their duties after a short time, or they become rapists and child-molesters.

mutawes ...No there are no motawes in Qatar...
To my knowledge, no muslim country other than Saudi ( and possiblly afganistan if u want to count that as a country) has that concept...
May i also add that Mutawes do not represent in any way main stream Islamic traditions or laws , and are held in contempt by the vast majority of muslims including most saudis...
The fact that they have so much influence in saudi is attributed to an incident in the arly 80's when some of these crazy people occupied the Kaaba and held that hooly shrine hostage before jordanian special forces were flown in and killed them...
fearing for their Rule, the saudi royal familly accepted some sort of a division of power amongst themselves and the Wahabis wherby the Saud;s ( the royal familly) reign over the political and economic aspects of the country) whereas the wahabis ( mutawas) would be left to regulate the religious and moral issues of the society ( much to the dismay of most saudis i reitterate)...
I hope this is helpfull
